So, Phillips, the largest company with an initiative for developing "glasses-free" stereographic viewing, is throwing in the towel.

For those of you who don't like the idea of "3D glasses" as a requirement to get your stereo groove on, this is not good news.

Personally, It doesn't bother me in the least bit.

This economic crisis is going to "kill" a lot of great but not so good profitable technology.

We should open here at RED User the new tread session called "Technology that quits"... or a similar in that way.

After seeing some of the attempts at glassless 3d at trade shows, I say give me glasses. Much less eyestrain and much better image quality.
Glassless may get there eventually, but I don't see how it would ever be anything more than a small screen novelty unless they can discover completely new techniques.
Went to see Coraline in 3d digital at a relatively new theater and I was blown away by the quality. The new digital version of 3d is very watchable and doesn 't produce near the eyestrain that older film based techniques did.

I never liked the Phillips autostereo monitors. I think it was useful only for publicity effects on tradeshows.
