On Location Shot Management - 2 Ideas

Call me crazy in advance, but...

1) It would be great to be able to delete a shot/take on camera. Scary, but sometimes its so obvious a take is garbage & such a waste of precious CF card space (not to mention transfer time and post-time looking and punting bad takes). It would be great to be able to do this. If this is ALREADY possible, please forgive me...and tell me how!

2) Fill up CF card, transfer contents to Red Drive ON CAMERA, clear CF card, keep shooting. This would be awesome when working in environments where transferring to a laptop is not easy or possible, and where the camera is moving around during shots on uneven footing (so writing to Red Drive directly is risking drop outs). Is there a way to do this?

You can try the nexto Backups if you want to avoid a laptop.

This has been discussed before, and the reply is generally related to the crew size/budget/project type.

Shooting bigger crews, narrative, you will hear a "NOOO" scream.

Those working independently, documentary in remote locations, will sigh "If only..."

RED has stated that they are currently not planning on enabling such a feature.

That said, I would LOOOOOVE at least the first option. I find it weird that one can format a full magazine on camera, but should "for security reasons" not be allowed to erase the last take?

Option 2) sounds good too for a "extra" in security.

Both options must sounds terrible for the Red Soft Develop Team, means to use the camera for data transport beetwen magazines, not complicated but as martin said not secure at all.

it's a different story to format an entire magazine than a single shot. To format a magazine you have to think about how the REEL should be named to make it fit into an existing project. And furthermore you are asked wether you want to format or not if the magazine is already formatted and filled with shots. Sure it's easy but not too easy.

Erasing a shot is dangerous. Anyone who shot with tape could have done that but never did it - for safety reasons. When shooting film this is impossible anyway.

I use 20+ CF cards and have a RedRaid that very rarely is used.

Personally I don't need such a feature. I never let the camera roll when I don't think that the shot has a chance and even it was crap I don't have the time to go through the menue to delete a shot.

I don't know any director who would love this option. The natural answer would be: "What? Delete? Get another magazine!"

Regarding request 2:

Backing up from CF to RedRaid via the camera is a request that is as old as Red is. CF cards are very, very, very robust. Backing them up is meaningful and can be done conveniently with a Nexto while the camera is shooting on the next CF card. The beauty of CF is weight and operating security. Adding the RedRaid would scarify weight. Plus you would have to wait with shooting until the content is on the Raid. Not practical.

Oh man, I hadn't even considered this aspect. Of course, if you don't have film or tape... you gotta have something, don't chya? Duhhh!

I'm new to RED and actually still shooting with a Canon XL2...

...yeah, yeah, I know... anyway, I've come close to making the jump to HD but with limited funds, I have been VERY cautious and hesitant (obviously). I'm about 85% sure I'll end up getting, at the very least, the RED Scarlet 2/3" with the RED mini-prime lens set.

20 CF cards are roughly a day. When shooting 35mm I rarely shoot more than 20 rolls at 25 fps. Both, CF cards and 300 feet reels, are roughly 4 minutes. Many are used to much longer runtimes and prefer the RedRaid or the new solid state derivate - the RedRam.

When shooting with multiple cams endless footage -TV shows for instance - you need a data wrangler who off loads the RedRaids/Rams to dedicated Raid systems and again backs all up onto tape. There are quite a few on this forum who do this as their daily profession. Although this works securely it's nothing for the small, flexible team.

I prefer the CF route. It fits nicle may style of shooting and is convenient, fast, secure, and pretty worry-free. Backing up files for convenient data transfer to the project raid on a Nexto on set while shhoting is a no-brainer. In the not too distant future we will have CF cards that will hold 16GB, are fast and will cost about 20 USD each. Then you will buy a bunch for each project, expose them and never use them again but archive the CFs somewhere as you are doing now with film rolls or tapes.
