RED workflow with DVCPROHD via COLOR to SD output

Hi redusers,


I'm trying to find a decent workflow for final dvd output from 2k r3d.


We have been editing a 2 hour show which will be final output to DVD, 50% shot on RED and 50% with varicam.
My timeline is currently dvcproHD mixed with H proxies.

I ran a few tests with exporting the final output current settings fcp etc & as you prob already know its not good once we hit compressor for an mv2.

Does anyone have a good workflow with dvcpro / red to Color then final output dvd ?

If I send to Color, my project settings are 1920 x 1080 ( after color fixer has sorted out the corrupt files) after grading what are the best settings to send back to fcp ?

I'd stay in ProRes HQ 1920 x 1080 to have a high quality master for future use (like Blu-Ray).

I found that Purifier ( by Innobits from Sweden ) is a very good downscaler, albeit quite pricey if used for that purpose alone. MPEG Streamclip does a pretty decent job too and it's free.

IMHO Compressor is a good MPEG-2 encoder, but not the best. If you need better quality, go for Cinema Craft Encoder (on either platform). Even if you want to stick with Compressor, feed it SD size for DVD.

The MOTU V4HD interface does hardware based capture and transcode between SD, HD, DVCproHD, and Prores HQ. Its about $4K though.

This is quite true. The Innobits software is very good. Never feed compressor anything else other than good SD for mpeg-2 coding.
