    HI everyone,

I have searched for a bit looking for a resolution to this problem and found nothing. Could be a very simple fix.

    Here it is:

I need to convert some r3d files to a format that After Effects can handle. I'm running windows XP, 4GB RAM, Intel Dual core, with a Quadro FX 1000 card.

The CS4 r3d importer is not working (I'm assuming because its not supported, only for vista 64)

I tried REDCINE for converting the files, but can only preview the files in the library. When I switch to the player all I get is black frames.

I tried un/re- installing REDCINE, nothing.

I can run REDCINE ok on my DELL INSPIRON with much less RAM and a crappy video card, but it can't handle exporting the images. No matter the format they come out as distorted images. Nothing usable there.

    Any suggestions would be grand.

    Thanks in advance!!!

Make sure After Effects has all its updates applied. There's a good breakdown of all the steps at this link -

My next suggestion would be to test the Cineform intermediate. They are still working on their CS4 engine but I hear it plays nice on CS3.

    Thanks.

Yeah, I have After Effects updated. The plug in says it is installed in my windows control panel but AE doesn't see the r3d files. Ideally it would be nice to get this plugin working. BUT I think that it is just not supported.

I figured that I could set up REDCINE to run over night and convert the files. WRONG! haha. I ended up with like 20GB of distorted frames...

I'll look into the Cineform idea, though it would be nice to not have to pay for additional software.

I use CineForm. It's convenient, actually works and delivers very high fidelity with no information lost, neither in highlights nor in the blacks.

    Ok,

So I'm going to download a trial of one of the Cineform products. Which one should I get? Any suggestions?

All i need to do is convert r3d files to EXR or DPX, i guess even TIffs may work. I dont know which would be more lossless going to After Effects...

Hey Chris- do you have Premiere as well?

I create a project in Premiere, import my footage- cut if you need to- and then go to AE, import that Premiere project file.

    Seems to work that way.

"Twiddle" the Color tab settings - sometimes the camera mis-records the metadata and you get black (actually VERY dark) scenes. Hopefully it will pop back to life.
