Really.... I'm super shocked. with lines around the tent, I woulda thought more like 4,000 I guess lotsa lookers?
I'm sure thats what most people thought if not more. This is another example of honest communication that the other HD and HD+ camera mfgs should sure learn from!!!!!
I think MBA programs in the future will study the RED development phenom. as an example of how honest communication with the adopters, and a process, to hear and consider implementing their ideas, produces not only a great product but also a very loyal user base.
that is surprising... and 10%.... thanks Jim.
Oh sweet, so if I ordered a few months ago I could be like number 1,800 or so instead of 2,500 or higher. I thought at first I might be as high as like 3,000, so if I'm anywhere in the first 2,000 that really isn't bad.
I'm thinking of placing another order later this summer, we'll see, but I definitely need the prime lens set and when they announce the 50-150mm for sale I'd like to have that on order no doubt. I may or may not go ahead and order an additional camera body, another battery kit, and one or two more hard drives. I haven't decided yet.
Humm, only around 2,000 orders is a little surprising.... Makes me feel better though, knowing that I'm further down the list than I thought (I was under the impression that I was 2500+) Well, once a proven workflow comes out, there will be plenty more cameras sold.

I think you would have had 4000 or more if there wasn't already a six months to a year backlog with the first 1500. Since the backlog was so long but production would be very ramped up by the time they get to the end of the preorders, I think a lot of people just figured they may as well wait and order once it is established. In other words, it may take six months to get the first 1500 out the door but numbers 1500-2000 will probably be only a month or so, so if you wait until those are about to deliver to order it might only be another month or so to get it, but they would have the peace of mind of seeing all those cameras in action. If RED had had 5000 REDONEs sitting in a warehouse ready to ship on April 18 I think they could have sold every one of them.
Also remember, new orders don't get the $2500 bonus that us res holders get.
I'm curious Jim, is that "about 2000" number the grand total of the reservations + orders after the reservations system was closed, or is that just the number of orders since the close of the reservation system? In other words, should the 1,500 reservations be added to that "about 2000" number to make a grand total of around 3,500, or is "about 2000" the overall total of reservations and orders?
In terms of motivating 3rd party developers to support various aspects of production and post unique to the RedOne (and to some degree SI, Dalsa, etc) it does matter how many camera owners will make up their market.
That was my estimate (2000 cameras) after Jim published the first delivery estimate. It came to about 200 camera deliveries / month + he said all orders should be fullfilled in spring ( =10 month).
Anyway, Jim´s post ended speculation I guess.
What´s more interesting: At what number do we have a 4K camera market saturation?
Jochen
2000 is really good considering it is a totally new concept/new company.
...but wait after some good movies are publicly released...
I think there is a lot of people that can't (or dont want to) take the risk to buy before the camera gains general credibility.
If things goes in the right way, and with possible future RED 4K projectors etc...it might establish itself as an affordable new high-end standard.
