Thanks Steve... my situation is I'm an experienced stills photographers, used to working with RAW files, messing with HDR etc - but very little experience with the moving image and no formal training whatever in cinematography. I'm a stills guy looking to branch out, effectively - and hoping I'm going to be a quick-study self-taught cinematographer; almost all of what I shoot will be in the field, EFP-style documentary stuff. And I've chosen RED to do it. I'll speak to SWMBO and see if I can sign up for the class :-)

In the meantime I'm self-teaching RED, and sweating over RCX - and those bits of CS5 I've never touched before - like PPro!

    Hi Mike,

I attended Reducation last summer in Burbank. I can say that it is well worth it - the college that I teach at covered it for me, but had that not been the case, I would have paid myself. I have cinematography and film making experience, but had never touched a RED camera before the class. I also have a lot of experience dealing with RAW images in the still world.

For quite a while before attending, I was learning everything I could from here, and experimenting with grading .R3D files in RedCine-X, trying different work flows, etc... I can say that this definitely helped since I had at least some base knowledge to go on, but at the same time it was not absolutely necessary.

As far as actual film making experience is concerned, you could get through no problem without it. There may be some terms that you would not recognize immediately, but that is not a problem, you will pick it up, and the instructors were always there to answer anything that they could. As Stephen said, the training focuses on creating images with Red cameras, various work flow strategies, looks, storage, and a host of other important topics related to Red (way too many to list).

I had zero Red camera experience before going, but felt very comfortable with the RED ONE in a very short time frame. There will always be something that you can delve deeper into, but as an overall camera experience, it is surprisingly easy to use, and was my favorite part of the course. I would have wished for a bit more time with the cameras, but did get a good deal of very nice footage that I still am experimenting with today while I patiently wait for Epic-S.

Reducation is an intense week, in a good way. You will learn a vast amount, and gain some great experience in a fairly short time frame. The instructors are awesome (I am sure they change somewhat from class to class) but Red does a great job of bringing some ultra talented people.

some more fun on the REDucation front... we just posted this video today that Michael Cioni and I shot at his post house, LightIron last week, on 2 EPICs, busting some Myths about RED post production and showing were we are today with post on RED footage...

(also posted on the Learn area of red.com

For those that want a trip down memory lane, I did a quick google search and found the original RED mythbusters from years ago, the post house that Michael worked for at the time no longer exists but the video is still fun and relevant to watch - interesting how viable post was even way back then, and now years later how much more advanced it is in so many ways. back then we looked at lower rez pixels for the offline and big screen viewing from the 4k, these days with the power of the RED Rocket card we can watch RED and EPIC footage in full rez without any rendering, and prep advanced editing files for FCP and Avid in realtime using the Rocket card - pretty great.

Take a look when you have some time. I have a few other things in the works as well that we've shot over the past few months, including an in depth interview I did in Indonesia with a director of a great family movie called Red Dog, that I'll be putting up when they are ready.

    Thanks

RED doesn't really make a 4K camera. And it's not RAW. Maybe that one? :p

Is there any information on your next US class? Will you be doing another satellite location for the UK September class?

    Anthony,

The next US class should be announced in a few days - it will be in LA in late September and will be a short but powerful two day course. We will post the information here but you can also sign up for an email alert at www.red.com/learn/reducation
