Hi there, the New Zealand market is a fairly small one - there are only 4 million people in New Zealand all up, so there isn't a lot of cash to go around in the local market.

Overseas commercials etc that shoot here tend to shoot with production companies that use established guys (with obvious reasons) but if you have a very compelling CV you might do ok as an owner operator.

New Zealand is an awesome place to live - you can have an awesome life without very much cash compared to a lot of other places, simply because of the natural environment, but it's worth getting used to the idea if you are looking at coming over that there really isn't all that much work.

In Wellington you do have Weta and Park Road Post and awesome world level facilities that can attract international features - but there isn't the on going smaller work necessarily that you would see in other markets.

Auckland has a bit more ad work coming out of it, and there are a couple of companies that shoot overseas productions on a fairly regular basis (like The Sweet Shop) but at the moment due to the international recession everything is getting tougher, and it certainly hasn't been easy in the last 10 years or so from what I understand.

International Features do shoot both in Wellington and Auckland, but not on a really consistent basis, there are a couple of international Sci Fi Drama series shooting in Auckland at the moment (Spartacus and Legend of the Seeker) although I am not sure if they are shooting Red yet. I know one local show shooting Red in Auckland right now, but the budgets for an entire series here are less than a single episode of a primetime US show (the current red shot drama is the most expensive shooting to date, and their funding allocation from NZONAIR, which generally equates to most if not the entire budget, is $600,000NZ per ep - that's about $350K US an ep, and that's probably far and away the most expensive locally funded production that's been shot here in ages, so whether it gets a second series or not is a fairly random question.

In short, there is work potentially in both centres, but don't expect it to come easy and don't expect to earn major US centre dollars.

I'd say Auckland more than Wellington unless you get in with a Wingnut/Peter Jackson production (who understandably has his own sort of production centre around him fully stocked with some of the world's best talent) - with The Hobbit coming up though (and the definite possibility that it may shoot some flavour of Red One camera) there may be a bit of a production boom down there.

I'd haphazardly equate to the New Zealand production environment to something like Canada, only way smaller in terms of ongoing work, with the odd huge production due to our natural assets (In the film world at the moment being Landscape and Peter Jackson primarily).

My advice would be take a holiday here first if you can find a way to, a month or two, and if you absolutely fall in love with the country (many do) then you'll probably work out a way to live here irrespective of the work environment.

I wouldn't move here with work as a motivating factor - while we bat above our weight internationally those projects are relatively few and far between, and we just don't have enough every day advertising etc dollars being spent to support a thriving local production market - especially in this economy.

Thank you Craig, exactly what I was looking for. And rather expected. I live in a very small market now and it's getting smaller every day. I would love to go just to live in beautiful New Zealand and be with my family and I don't mind the expectation of needing to find other work. Or just to do some indie work of my own.

Much appreciated. I hope we meet sometime!

Definitely keep in touch, I work at a company called Afterglow (www.afterglow.co.nz) and we do a lot of motion graphics and post work (and as such love RED for what it offers us in terms of acquisition without the cost of film transfers.)

I work for Flying Fish/Fish N Clips - we are Auckland based and shoot the majority of our music videos on Red and a bunch of TVCs on Red also. We have been using the camera since day 1 virtually.

Always keen for help on music videos (in Post) or if you are keen to get on set I can help with that also.

    Cheers

Thanks Scott and everyone else. I would like to leave a comment, for no one in particular, just a general response.
Red camera is kind of a life saviour for me really and let me tell you why.

I am originally from South Korea but most wouldn't see me as one because; 1. I am bigger (muscular and taller) than most Asians. 2. Due to my facial features. I was 'westernised' at an early age. From an early age I have always thrived on other's energy/attention and unlikely most (stereotypical) Asians, I am very friendly and open. My early experience in the entertainment industry began as an actor in Korea(comedy-drama manly) with reasonable success (Most would have recognised me on the street, high school kids would rip my clothes and there was an endless supply of female companionship) and exposure. The sitcom that I was on (playing husband to the main character) called LA Arirang was no 1 in prime time (9pm daily) for nearly 2 years in a country that relies on exports (Samsung, LG, Hyundai etc) with 47 million people. (Yes we are finally considered by some world organisations as a 'rich' country but with many of its people with a mindset and mannerisms yet to catch up with its economic prowess) And there I learnt to use a pro camera (Sony Beta) as a hobby. After around 3 years of TV acting, I had to practically escape the country because of two issues. Mandatory army services and a regretful mistake I had made (which I prefer not to discuss).
Since them my life had been about work and financial success.
Around 6 years ago, when I was still living in Christchurch, New Zealand (I am based in Auckland now), I had been diagnosed with 2 cancers. (T-cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma and Leukemia) The terrribly diseases were discovered at its last stage mark IV and I was told that I could die in 4 weeks. Yes, 4 weeks. Well that news changed a few things in my life and forced reshuffling of my frame of mind. After a year of treatment combined with Chemo and Radiation (refused marrow transplant) I am still around, albeit as kind of a new person. Sorry its 1230am and need to go to sleep. Need to go site visit for a music video that I am directing in the morning. Will post another log tomorrow... till then.

I've never done "real" work in post, but I do know After Effects pretty well. I'd love to see exactly what you post team does as far as work in post goes. I would then be able to see if I was of any value to your post team. (I really need to make a video of all my work.)

I'm also keen to help on-set for some experience. Let me know if you'd like some help and drop me an email so I can contact you. :)

cont. Just to wrap it up, I will continue on from where I left off on the 23rd.
Anyways during the treatment I had this enlightenment, sort of an awakening really. The whole cancer experience gave me a new frame of mind and outlook. I knew God gave me a second chance in life and I was convinced that I had to do something, purposeful.

My life till then had been focused on pleasures the world had offered in extensive variety. The cancer made me refocus and now my aspirations are still as distinct but pointed at an intensely varying directions.

Through listening to an internal calling and by reconciling it with external calling I knew I had to tell stories and move and inspire people so they also get the opportunity to change their lives without having to go through the extremes like cancer.

When I had realised the purpose of my life I was already well into my thirties and had very little experience behind the camera. I felt I was way behind everyone and had felt a sense of constant urgency to accelerate my learning and experience. Starting with Sony FX1 then Canon H1, then to Panny Hvx 202 and HPX 502 I had advanced my experience with the camera and work at a good pace.

Now, the whole point to this story. Enter RED ONE. After I had purchased the RED ONE camera last October, the scope of my work began to change drastically. The migratory move from CHCH to Auckland coincided with the timing of the purchase and that also contributed to great opportunities I have been offered.

Today I am in a shoot with Katie Wolfe (director) and Ginny Loane for a short film (working as camera tech). And until now there had been a host of jobs including commercials and music videos which I had either directed, DP'd, or simply worked as a camera technician. (I am not a rental company). I guess what I am trying to say is that without the RED camera the opportunities that I have been blessed with probably would not have materialised so soon. Although its resonably costly to have a complete RED ONE kit with bells and whistles, it still remains I believe, the most advanced camera for what it costs.

So I wanted to take this opportunity to thank God for appointing Jim Jannard (and you too Mr.Jannard and whomever helped the RED ONE what it is today and for many years to come) and all of his helpers to make my life's purpose to stay on track and on speed, as it would also have done for many others around the world.

In the next 4 years you will see one or more of my feature films released, using RED's technology. I hope it inspires you to act upon your brilliant thoughts as RED has done for me.

Check out the website (fishnclips.com) most of it is done in After Effects/Nuke and graded in Color.

Drop me a bell or pop into the office and drop in your reel.

    Cheers

Didn't see it mentioned here but Metro Film in Auckland have a couple of Red Ones for hire. They also have film cameras, Arri 435's etc, which also means they have some beautiful lenses just waiting to be used on the Red Ones.
