Hi all, I am a new forum member but I've been following the avid forum for a while now. I work for Edit Studios in Tel Aviv, we are currently using Avid for offline and FCP for online. we do mostly film and a few commercials.
now to the point. i read this great article by Scott Simmons from provideo coalition about the new Avid Media Access (AMA), that currently works with Sony xdcam ex and panasonic p2.
here's the article in two parts:
for those of you who don't want to read the whole thing here's a recap: AMA allows you to work directly from the camera files inside avid with no transcode needed. and the best part for red useres:
"The current plan is to license AMA SDK to camera manufacturers so that they can write plugins for their cameras. The good thing with AMA Architecture is that we can decouple release of Media Composer from the release of plugins. Any plug-in can be dropped to the running version of Media Composer and it will work seamlessly. Actually for this release plug-in for XDCAM-EX is written by Sony. Having said that we are getting a lot of pull from end-users to make the AMA SDK available, so this may change.
so, Will AMA be the answer to all our prayers?
in the media composer of my dreams, the powers of AMA and MetaFuze are embedded into the MC software, so in a single click we will have all the metadata on master clips linked to R3D inside an avid bin. even if it's not playable but transcodeble it will already make a huge improvement in my psychiatric condition after building a red project workflow.
thanks for all your very helpful posts past and future, Amit.
