When does the RED EPic or the new upgrade replacement for the RED One come out?

We recently asked for "test pilots" to try out our new color science. About a week later there is a build for everyone to work with. Then, soon after, there is a full download package called Build 20 available. This seems like a much better approach to "announcement and release" compared to our old way of doing things.

If we feel fairly certain of hitting our targets in a timely fashion, we'll tell you about it. RED Rocket is an example.

But going forward we are not likely to announce or give out dates of things we are working on until just before they are ready. The exception would be something we need a lot of customer feedback on (like Scarlet & EPIC)... but even then we'll try to get closer to completion before talking about it and asking for feedback.

We really appreciate our customers and their patience with us as we are building a camera company from scratch. It has been much more complicated and difficult than ever imagined. We are always trying to find ways to improve our business. That includes how we communicate with our partners and customers.

Other than 'non-announcements' the last word we heard on Epic was they were still aiming for published date - end of summer/fall.

I am betting on full shipments NAB next year. There may be some "limited" releases, but I think there will be a little time before all the bugs get worked out.

This is an indredibly complex undertaking, and unlike last time, they have to work out all major bugs BEFORE the cameras ship. And finally, they are dealing with a lot more complex components this time around.

This is a huge task. If they had fully workinig prototypes in house TODAY it would still be 3 to 4 months before they could get them out the door.

This is the next chapter in RED's history. RED ONE was seen to be the "Prototype" that we all had a hand in. And while the numbers of sales are AMAZING, they are going to be puny compared the number of Fix lens Scarlets that will be out there. There will be no "Send it back and we'll fix it on our dime" sort of thing this time. They have to have it right out of the gate.

This is going to take some time.

No matter how much I love Jim's little updates. I rather them work out all the kinks before announcing any shipping dates. I got a RED1 thats doing just fine right now. My bet is for NAB 2010, delays will happen, just look how many times specs and details have changed. Jim is doing it right.
