    REDundead V1.20 READ ME

REDundead recovers R3D files from media with damaged filesystems or erased/formatted media. The percentage recovered can vary depending on the condition of the media/filesystem at the time of recovery.

WARNING: Prior to a new project, all sensitive data should be securely erased on media. Failing to do so could result is previously deleted data being recovered from formatted media by REDundead.

    Usage:
    REDundead <input device or file> <output dir>
    or
    REDundead <input device> <output dir> <start MB>

To get the device you want to recover from, you can use "diskutil list" in the terminal.
If it lists "disk9" for your device, use "/dev/rdisk9" for REDundead. (note rdisk instead of disk).

    Example: REDundead /dev/rdisk9 /Volumes/newdisk

Just a word of caution for RENTAL HOUSES - we tested the REDundead app at various stages and it is SO GOOD at recovering R3D files that in most cases it will also recover PREVIOUS RECORDED CLIPS from past jobs.

So ... if you are a RENTAL HOUSE - you REALLY, REALLY, REALLY need to do a secure erase on your media before renting - if you don't - you are risking the security of your previous clients work - and in feature films with A-list actors this is serious business -

You can write zero's across your media in disc utility.

I copied Mark's post above to this thread from elsehwere, it's a very important topic! And not just for rental houses.

I have successfully recovered files from a RED RAM and two 16GB CF cards so far today. and what is more, the RED RAM recovery gave me files from the previous rental client plus three clips I shot on a project two weeks ago!!! The RED RAM was blank when I received it back and I just did a quick format in disk utility on my MBP before running REDUNDEAD on it. This is a very, very powerful tool. But can be a serious concern in regards to protecting intellectual property.

For anyone who will be renting out their media, or for anyone who is renting the media, it is going to be absolutely critical in most cases for the media to be zeroed-out before it changes hands, if you don't want anyone to recover R3D data.

So this message is not only for rental houses, but also rental customers.

Edit> I have done an erase with level-1 (single pass) security in OSX on a RED-RAM and a full format in WinXP on a RED-Drive and since have not been able to recover anything from either magazine. So Windows users (and Linux guys) should be aware of this too, even though the REDUNDEAD utility is currently OSX only.
