I'm thinking of buying a Drobo (4 bay, FW800) and I'm curious if any of you video guys have anything to say about it. I've spoken with 3 different non-video types that love them, and my mac consultant says that I should get faster read/writes from the drobo than the standard 7200rpm external drives I'm currently using.
So, any thoughts?

I've had a lot of trouble with the drobo I'm currently editing a feature on. It looks like we've finally stabilized any problems but there was a period where we had to send the unit back.
Ultimately, it has kept the data safe despite drive failures though.
Bottom line is, the Drobo works but it's no replacement for a raided server.

Unfortunately a raided server is not in my immediate future. But it sounds like the Drobo performed just like advertised, protecting the data when drives fail, right? Unless the drobo was the cause of the failure...Originally Posted by Eren Ozkural

Well, there was an earlier problem on the Drobo before I came onboard the show that WAS the fault of the unit; that's why it had to get sent back.
It has worked as advertised afterwards by retaining data despite drive failure.
It is the FW800 model.

We have a first gen Drobo, and after some initial troubles (mainly to do with then then-new 1.5tb Seagates, and having to re-isntall some firmware, which is troublesome at least on a Mac), I have come to peace with it.
Slow like a snail, but putting my mind at ease for back-ups.
Ideal scenario for me would be to run the actual editing off an internal drive, and then do automatic backups to the Drobo at night. Well, or rather at times of sleep :)
