    Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to Log & Transfer footage in FCP, and I keep encountering the same problem: The folder shows up correctly in the L&T window, as do the thumbnails, but then when I add a clip to the queue for transcoding, it appears to be working (spinning icon) for 10-30 seconds, then the icon turns into an exclamation point that indicates "error: no data."

I am using FCP 6.05 and downloaded the L&T plugin & QT codec yesterday, so it is the most current version. My system is as follows:

MacBook Pro 2.33 Core 2 Duo
    3GB RAM
    OS 10.4.11

Editing with Lacie 1TB d2 drive, connecting with FW800.

The total amount of footage is probably around 80 min., and the takes are 10 sec. to 1 min.

I've searched the forum and other websites, read the whitepaper, but I'm stumped. Any ideas? Is it as simple as my system being inadequate?

By the way, I'm new here, and I didn't know whether I should add to the thread of the same topic yesterday or start a new one. Sorry if I did it the wrong way.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Are you set to Native or ProRes? In other words, are you transcoding to ProRes or creating native wrapped QT's?

I personally never use FCP L&T, I transcode everything with RedRushes.

Also transcoding with a laptop is kind of a no-no, download SMC Fan Control and see how hot your laptop gets, mine goes up to 185 degrees, so I always transcode on a tower...

    Joe,

    Thanks for the quick reply.

    I'm transcoding to ProRes.

I have not tried RedRushes yet -- maybe that's the next step.

My fan does go into high gear when I start the operation, so even if I do get it working, I was going to do it in smaller segments.

yeah use RedRushes it's way better

It's good to use a tower too, not only because your laptop will overheat and die but RedRushes is multi-processor (FCP isn't) and the towers have either 4 or 8 processor cores and will transcode 2 to 4 times as fast

in any event download and install SMC Fan Control, you can speed up the rpms of your fan, thus forestalling the day of doom...

That's funny that you mentioned that...my MacBook Pro - 2.93 CPU, 7200prm gets very hot and I now have a fan underneath it to cool it off. My 1.5 HD drive is getting hot too, putting a fan on that too. Must get the WD "Green HD" that would help, I imagine.

Where can you download this SMC fan control? Thanks for the tip.
