Hey guys, i wonder if you can help me.

I am considering purchasing a second hand RED ONE. As you can imagin the price is something to consider when purchasing privately.

How do I make sure the camera isnt stolen when buying. And how do I cover myself from this as i would also be hiring it out in the industry so It would not be registered to me obviously. The chap said to me that he bought it from somebody that bought it originally early 2008.

Would I be liable down the line or not liable with there was an y complications with the camera although I would have a written and signed receipt from the vendor??

please help guys as I need to give a decision to seller by tuesday.

    thanks

Just get the serial # and get in contact with Red to see if the camera was reported stolen. If not, then it is totally OK to purchase. That is if the price is right. Otherwise, I would purchase new since you do get a year warranty.

    Hi,

Why not use your full real name as required by the forum & contact Red direct to see if the camera is stolen.

When you buy a RED One, you have to contact RED to properly transfer ownership of the camera, so that the serial number gets transferred into your name and you can get your own log-in account to download firmware updates, etc.. So you should contact RED and give them the necessary information. If the guy that you're buying from is not the owner of record, then RED will let you know.

Ownership transfer does have a fee through RED. And for an additional fee, you can have the camera sent to them and they will service the camera and give you a 90-day warranty.

Other than that, you should get a proper bill of sale or purchase receipt of some kind from the seller anyway just for proper documentation and tax purposes -- assuming you're in a country or area that cares about that sort of thing.

Get in touch with Red, and send the camera in to RED for evaluation. You´ll recieve a new warranty for a limited time, and are able to take fortune of upgrading the camera.
Only registered users are able to download camera software and later on are able to change to Epic/Scarlet for a special pricing.

I think red charges 500 USD for the re-evaluaton and transfer of ownership

Not a bad idea, or perhaps just be able to call Red when you are looking over the camera, give them the serial and get a yes or no on hotness.
