  1. #1 Why is my RED One suddenly so noisy. . . video noise, that is. . .
    Hi all. . .

Last year, when we shot the majority of our film on Build 15, our camera was clean as a whistle except in really poorly-lit areas.

This year, when using Build 18, it's noisy as heck. I mean, it looks like my old HVX-200. It doesn't matter how much exposure, either. If it isn't 100% blown, it's noisy.

The only differences between this year and last year are these:

    1. New audio update versus original equipment
    2. Shooting on drive versus shooting on cards
    3. Build 18 versus Build 15
    4. Birger mount versus dumb Nikon mount

    That's it.

It's just ridiculously noisy. I can't stand it. I want my clean-as-a-whistle camera back again.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

I have to agree with you. My older footage never had any noise. Now, I always have some noise in my shots. Red Space seems to amplify this, so I never use it. I would be curious to hear other reports.

That is contrary to what most other people are saying (Build 15 and before versus Build 16 and later). I would recommend submitting a support ticket so the tech support guys can help you trouble shoot....

It could also be a result of better compression. Less noise reduction.

Is everything about how you are processing and evaluating the footy apples to apples?

Was there any change in how you were viewing the footy? New monitor, older monitor re-calibrated, dark room vs bright sunny room??? Exposure lifted in grading? Older footy shot in daylight, build 18 clips under tungsten? Etc.

We have made no changes in processing at all. We were editing proxies, and still are editing proxies. No grading involved in either place. Same program. Indeed, the new footage sticks out in the time line like a sore thumb. As soon as we are into new shots, BANG, there comes obnoxious levels of noise, even in the most brightly lit daytime scenes.

And this is the exact same computer system. Footage shot under Build 18 recently looks like an HVX. Footage shot under Builds 15 and 16 looks clean as a whistle.

I'll try Build 20, but I've heard that it has issues with the Birger.

I just want my old camera back. I loved the RED One. Now it irritates me every time I look at the footage.

Blair, what are the procedures for initiating a repair ticket?

I am noticing the same thing.
In perfect conditions 'exteriors daylight' I get noise.
It's not affecting the resolution, It's really small "grain looking " and it mimics film, so I don't bother.

    I am on build 20
