I'm a visual effects artist that will be working with raw RED files when the edit of the film I'm working on is finalized. Unfortunately, the editor doesn't know how to extract DPX sequences from his editing on Avid. So I'll be expected to generate the DPX sequences myself off of the raw RED files based on the Quicktime references.

Can anyone recommend a way to approach this that I can share with the editor so I can find the proper takes to generate the DPX files with? Is there a way to use the QT references to generate the DPX sequences? I'm doing temp FX at the moment with HD Quicktimes from the editor. But when it comes time to generate the 4K and 2K sequences, I want to be prepared.

    Thanks in advance.

The ReD guide at www.avid.com/red shows a pull list workflow back to applications like Monkey from which DPX files can be extracted. The Avid can also track DPX metadata with absolute frame count of timecode if needed for lists.

I've installed Monkey Extract. Now its a matter of figuring out how to render out only the takes I'm doing VFX on, and not the entire film.

Unfortunatley, alot will depend on how your editor handles the project...and if he doesnt know how to pull the DPX himself it means you are likely going to have issues. This should be a task of the editorial dept, not vfx. I would consider finding an editor that understands the process, otherwise you will end up spending 3 times the amount of time really needed than if you did it right from the beginning.

Editor needs to send you a VFX pull list - should be as simple as moving the VFX takes to a new track and doing an EDL of just that track - or any other method they like.

Thanks, Cail. That should be easy enough.
