With an Epic-X upgrade in mind?

I was about to purchase it but when the IBC news started pouring out, I became hesitant. I was hoping to do some work with it until EpicX release but the upgrade program details are still vague.

Also, the new, better (cheaper?) EVF, new LCD, new rail system... buying any Red One accessories at this moment would probably not be a good idea.

Do we know if the Red One will be discontinued after Epic release?

Yay or nay, what says you?

I dunno know RED's shipping schedule but it looks to me like EPIC is still a way's off. And even when it does ship it's going to be in short supply because all of those 6,000+ RED ONE owners will get first dibs. And then there will be the wait while the NLE makers and 3rd party apps get up to speed and stabilized for 5K post. That could be 6-12 months down the road- purely speculative of course.

So yeah, if I had productions to do as of Sept '09, I'd get a RED. Or at least rent one. My understanding is RED ONE will be phased out with an upgrade program that extends to the body. Not sure where that leaves the accessories though. Bottom line is 4K is more than enough quality for a vast majority of productions. So even when EPIC is widely available, that still means a used RED ONE market will probably remain viable for several years.

basically.. red one can be the same thing as an epic x (with the sensor upgrade, as well as possible board up grades?)
the differences will be.. red one body has everything contained in it
epix x body has several mods to it in order to make up what red one has in the entire body.

So i dont see RED ONE phasing out completely.

it really depends if scarlet will completely out perform the red one at a much smaller price tag. (but then again.. when you start adding up all modules to the red one equivalent scarlet, your probably around the origional price tag of the RED ONE.

It's important to note, that there is no schedule.. There's a basic idea of one, but I would not stop buying a RED if you need one at this point.

I just bought a R1 due to the potential (and eventual) trade in, discount on future brains, etc. I want to learn and use something right now, and decided waiting wasn't good for my "education". As is mentioned elsewhere, the first Epic buyers will be R1 owners, and even if I can't or don't need an Epic-X, I imagine someone else will and at least make my body retain somewhat higher than normal value retiention (at least relative to buying another brand of camera).

So yes, I did buy with the mindset of an Epic-X upgrade or a Scarlet discount. A little scary to spend that much cash, but sometimes you have to take risks.
