Lets think about this, not true, but think about it

RED has scared other companies into realizing that they need to release RAW and stuff people actually want, if SCARLET and EPIC was a huge hoax... we still got the 7d with video, gh1 with great video, and hosts of other companies trying to follow in RED's footstep... so they can get some major props there

The other guys have been putting video in their point and shoot still cams for years. The migration of these features into the higher level DSLR cams was a just matter of time and corporate strategy. In part they have had to wait on widely available media that is fast enough and has enough capacity to handle the recording demands of HD. All of that just happens to be converging now. The needs of photojournalists have driven these developments more than the desires of the film making community. Canon was totally caught by surprise at the response to the 5DII from filmmakers.
Haven't seen any of them after 3 years of RED 1 stepping up to the plate with practical video in a pro grade intra frame codec of some kind. The only real competition so far is coming from ARRI with their new digital cams, Silicon Imaging and Sony with the new sub $40k F800 Cine Alta and Panasonic with their 1/2 price Varicam deals. Only the SI2K offers similar compact modularity. Ikonoscope is a small player with potential too.
Red wasn't even on the radar for Canon and Nikon. Bet it will be next year though.

There have been several cameras that have come out over the last several years with firmware upgrade possibilities but none of them really took advantage of that and used it to improve the cameras. Just simple fixes and updates. Meanwhile, with RED the camera has gone through so many builds that add features, improve picture quality, etc, etc.
I have a minor gripe: I think it would be more precise to say the many improved builds were not "free" but "no extra charge". Many of us paid $17500 for a camera body that was pretty buggy and immature (initially audio recording and some video outputs did not work among other things) with the trust and knowledge AND THE EXPECTATION that it would be fixed and improved. But we still have no remote camera control which I would have expected just a few months after release. And even now the R1 can be a bit quirky. All in all it has been an interesting ride and a fair deal. I don't think we overpaid but I don't think we underpaid either.

As far as other cameras - if you are referring to DSLR types like the Canon 5D and such - those cameras are ASIC based and have only limited ability to upgrade (as will an ASIC based RED camera) AND are typically released in a much more mature state.

PS I just read David Rasberry's post and agree with everything he said.

One would hope then that a company would focus on making it's first / only product work to expectation after 2 years rather than being distracted with the release of another 2 models that will have similar problems?

Just goes to show that having a ton of money doesn't quell the need for constant attention.

I think most ("most" being of those who actually own and/or use the camera regularly) would say that their first camera has exceeded their expectations, and on the whole... delivered more than what was promised...

That's an incorrect assumption... and you seem to be the one looking for attention...

Perhaps you should take the time to read these boards for a while... before posting obnoxious and uninformed "chatter".

RED took what they learned from the first one (a ton ) and put it into the new cameras...while keeping their loyal in the loop through this development process... thats called SMART... not to mention 100% trade-in credit on the new models... Thats not how Canon or Nikon et al work...

Most of us who own RED ONE, love them, despite some quirks that we know will be addressed with Epic/Scarlet... and Build 21 with REC42... forget about it. The new color science is incredible... and the cameras will only get better and more affordable...

Chill dude. While offering a contrary opinion is fine, taking a cheap shot at the founder of the company is not going to get you very far... and more likely to get you banned to the outer limits.

    All due respect,
    Kind regards,

A little defensive I think. You RED folks really have to be a little less sensitive about critism.

I don't think so really. All of the members of REDuser/ScarletUser have been kept-beat by beat-in touch with the development of the program. The thing that people, such as yourself, tend to forget that it is an unusual business practice that RED are employing, with involving its members in the loop of the cameras development. Most cam companies may leak out a few rumours a months before release or suddenly show a beta version at some trade expo. Red has been transparent all the way through. The regulars here know that Jim and the team are not going to do what they did with the RED1 (ie release a beta camera to the tribe). They realise they are hitting a wider market this time and want the cameras to be on track as soon as released.

We know whats going on. We are happy, if a little less sane through anticipation.

We know this, so comments from people who obviously haven't been reading the boards and read comments from the RED team over the past year don't generally go down very well. Its pretty much that simple. The RED team have been transparent throughout. I personally love the business ethic and love the fact we are getting the cameras we want and pretty much asked for and much more. We were here screaming for what we wanted and they listened.

The main point is... the above is an inaccurate statement. If you polled those who are using the camera everyday, they would likely mostly say that the red is currently beyond original expectations on the whole. Just sounds like an old statement that you picked up from some old thread somewhere.

But, then... your 12 posts seem to be on the order of trying to agitate and posting opinions as though they are fact (even though they are sometimes based on inaccurate information), so it's only reasonable to expect that some folks are not going to take your intent here very seriously

Zane, if it wasn't for all your other posts, I just might take the time to explain RED ONE's development history.

But in the light of those, I'll repeat what I said to you earlier: do you have anything sensible to contribute to this board ?

    If not, then please go.
