  1. #1 follow focus for "18-85"
Hello, I'm having a little trouble with follow focuses and my Red Pro 18-85.
I just received my redrock FF today and sadly found that it infact does not work on my rig. My rig is mounted on the red production bundle and im trying to use the redrock ff V2. Even thought they said this ff will work I cant see how, way to little clearance for this ff to fit. What I was wondering is, what would be a good follow focus for my setup? Redrock is a little frustrating. They are an email only operation. Its driving me nuts, If I could have just had an analog conversation with a human, perhaps I could have streighened this out before recieving this ff. Sorry needed to vent a bit :)

    Cheers!

We at Abel sell a number of follow focuses, including several models that will work with the RED 18-85. For a nice, adjustable and relatively inexpensive model, I suggest the ARRI MFF-1. It is designed for lightweight 15mm rods and we have a bundle for REDusers kitting the unit together with our Universal 15-19 rod adapter and the appropriate gear for the lens for $2050. It's all you need to work with your camera and lens.

Why doesn't it work with the 18-85?

I found the same problem with my 18-85mm and tried out a number of FF units to find what would fit with my 19mm RED rails set up.

The problem is that the lens is so large in its diameter that the bridge on most FF units is too high.

I was told the ARRI FF4 would fit but never tried it, and the FF3 does not fit. As budget was a concern for me and that if people want an FF4 they can easily hire it i left the race between single rail mounts...MFF1 and the Cinevate Durus. I ended up buying the Cinevate which works extremely well. It does have a couple things about it that arn't ideal but in general it works fantastically well with the lens. The reason i went that way was because i decided to take a punt and the price was almost half of the MFF1. I'm happy with it and it's rock solid and saved some $ as well. For bigger budget jobs where we are hiring in multiple lenses the extra cost of an FF4 is nothing.

Just my opinion but i'm happy...enough. Search for Cinevate and read some feedback about it.

Hey guys, thanks for all your feedback. He's an update, after looking more closely at the setup I realized that I could infact make this work with the 18-85 RP. What you have to do is basically dissemble the 15 mm mount and the 19mm adapter. Then swap some parts around so basically you take the adapter piece out of the equation. By doing this I lower the profile if the ff so that it fits under the large diameter of this lens. So not it seems to do the trick!

Sadly I have called many many times and have never gotten more then an answering machine. I've left many messages and never a call back. Thing is they are great to talk to via email. But in cases where you have to speak to somene quickly that becomes a problem. They say there turn around for emails could be as long as 2 days. This is problematic when there is an order error and you need if fixed before the order goes out. (this has happened to me). Having said that, they are nice people, and the value to cost of their products are very good!

Thanks Mitch for the link! I've book marked it. Depending how the RR works in production I will go here next. :)
