The Convergent Design nanoFlash recorder seems like a very good and affordable option as a video assist recorder/playback machine, anyone use this with their RED yet?

    More info:

Looks like a good way of getting rid of any downconverting once and for all.

    Of course not.

It is still not RED certified...(???)

Why should somebody with R1 risk about USD 3.000 just to try out???

It records and plays back both HD-SDI and HDMI video (apparently), why would it need to be certified?

I think it looks very promising, and there might be someone on here who has tried it out, and I would love to hear from them.

BTW:I am so tired of requests for downconverters to old crappy SD equipment, and want to support HD-SDI record/playback.

ki pro might be a better solution these days. more robust codec, quick and easy offline or even finishing solution for broadcast turn around recording straight to pro res HQ. also kind of pricey. but time is money.

Thank you Tom, I will look into it.

I am not so much into this for codecs and finishing away from R3D files, I am looking into an onset preview/playback solution. (so the DP can keep on working wile the director/clients looks at footage on monitor and discusses)

    Thank you for your inputs.

I use an AJA I/O. Send a 720 feed from the camera to the AJA and use log and capture in FCP to ingest the footage. Playback from the laptop for onset review of the footage.

I just discovered this last night, considering it as an option for recording 4:2:2 with an EX3. However, it only records 8-bit.
