Absolutely fascinating piece. Those who are betting against Cameron are betting wrong, IMHO.

I think, in the end, what Cameron is really hoping to accomplish with this film is to inspire human beings to explore and colonize neighboring planets, but even more importantly, neighboring star systems. It is our only hope for survival as a species (or as transhuman sentient machines, more likely), and perhaps Cameron is trying to make a contribution to humanity in this way. That would be my guess.

    BTW...

Cameron inserts himself into every aspect of the filmmaking process. With the virtual camera, he is both cinematographer and camera operator, working in his favorite style, handheld, for what he calls “an edgy, subjective quality.” The camera eliminates the need for cable cars, helicopters, or cranes, allowing him to shoot from any vantage point he chooses. “When I say, ‘Make me three to one,’ what I’m saying is ‘Make me eighteen feet tall,’ ” he said. “At that point, I’ve become a techno crane. If I say, ‘Make me twenty to one,’ I’m a helicopter.”

I love this quote from him:

“Watching him light is like watching two monkeys fuck a football.”

    Or:

“Tell your friend he’s getting fucked in the ass, and if he would stop squirming it wouldn’t hurt so much”

He could write a fantastic book about the industry. It would be a bestseller.

I am a huge Cameron fan and have high hopes for Avatar. The trailer though hasn't done it for me. But hey, he's always delivered, so...

“Avatar” is, like most speculative science fiction, a cautionary tale. Humans have turned Earth into a wasteland and, in their pursuit of a precious superconductor called Unobtanium, are beginning to do the same to Pandora.
I know someone who could help them find it... :)

I always love that: "let's live on another planet". We can't live on this
one without messing it up, and it's perfect. Any particular planets in mind?
Mars? can't wait, what a beauty. Couple of months on an oil rig will
    cure anyone of that notion.
Tell you what, you all go ahead, I'll catch up later ( :

    And take Cameron with you.

Besides, who cares about our survival as a species,
when the alternative to living on Earth is a million to
one shot of reaching some godforsaken crater ridden
desert incapable of nurturing life forms of its own?
If we fail here, we've failed, let it go already, no big deal.
Return to your basic elements and embrace the cosmos ( :

Did you see the theatrical trailer? (3.5 mins)

It's only in theaters, but will go online thursday.

Cameron will rock hollywood again, the king of the world is back.
