In the latest render it looks like it engages the lens gears. Could be the servo motor?

How will Auto Focus be in Still's mode Jim, Will it be up to standards of a DLSR? Also not as important but just for curiositys sake is there AF in video mode?
It can only will a DSMC if AF is good as dlsr's otherwise a CinePhotographer may need a second dslr body for quick AF in still's while on shoot..

If ALL this bases are covered than Truly will have a all in one DSMC...

In that time Sony and Canon will probably release lower-end, less featured cameras that scoop up much of that 3k for 3k market. Scarlet will appeal to the higher end pros. Meantime we'll have to wait another rmonth just to see what Scarlet really is. Pressing questions like, will the fixed lens Scarlet have a servo zoom that a run and gun camera needs? remain unanswered.
My wife is a stills photographer and her lens collection far outweighs the price of her camera bodies. For $3k you'd probably get something the equivalent of a consumer-grade Canon model's lens, whereas I'd personally much rather have the upgradability of Nikon/Canon/Red mounts and be able to start cheap and upgrade in the future if necessary. If budget is an issue, you could start off with something basic like a $99 Canon 50mm f/1.8d and still get great -looking pictures without having to hit $10k right off the bat. Having electronic support on non-RED lenses to me is probably the top feature I've read about today!!

If you add up any kit on the market, it's always more than the core rig when you put it all together - I've invested far more into my ultra-portable Canon HV20 that I use at home than I originally bought it for - lenses, batteries, hoods, and so on. It's the same thing with a car...you're not really buying a car, you're buying a car, plus insurance, plus property tax, plus repairs, plus maintenance, etc. etc. Everything is like a Transformer: more than meets the eye, haha.

Its a kind of shoulder mount and quick fire ENG. It looks like one of the grips rotates into a monopod type position as well...maybe.

What I don't get is how that EVF will work if you're mounting the Red Gunner on your shoulder.

At some point I think someone Red has to commit what the Scarlet is. It can't do everything. And so be it. No one is going to say no to new features but you do the best you can, offer what you can and stick by it. I don't want a 2015 camera announced in 2010 to be delivered in 2015. I want the best 2010 camera.

It also feels like people who didn't get the Red will be punished for it. This feels like a sorority. I am waiting for some kind of initiation. Is it really so hard for a new user to get a new product without being told how much they lack in commitment because they weren't there in the very first stages?
It is not those who believed, but those who invested that are getting an "option" to receive a return on their investment. Their is no "reward", and certainly no "punishment" being assigned.

If you knew nothing about this and tomorrow the Epic was being sold, it would be an excellent value all on its own.

I could not afford the Red when it came out and can not now. I read right here that this opportunity would soon be coming to an end and that if you wanted to act, you should do so now. It did not matter, I still did not have the work to justify the investment. No anguish, just business 101.

I happily rent Red when needed and shoot my own 5d and 7d kit to move the ball down the court. The great thing is that I am making money now and investing in lenses and support gear that will be 100% applicable when I can afford some future version of Red.

Right now the reward is having paying clients, not just clients

The EVF can be moved well forward of that position:

I know this concept has been brought up over the past 2+ years - but I don't think it's ever been addressed (and forum search is disabled tonight)...

It would be a great idea to support supplemental data to be encoded inside the RedCode data stream perhaps via a USB or serial or some other port on the I/O module.

Let's say I have a moco rig and I want to store meta data in the footage as to the pan/tilt/etc .. I could write to the serial port and the meta data would be captured in the RedCode frames.

I think this concept already applies to motorized lenses - smart glass, whatever you want to call them. But I think that's made possible because the lens module is inherently married to the rest of the modules.

So I guess I'm really proposing an external meta data module ... or a serial port on the existing I/O module.

    Anyway - just an idea!

To think.. assuming all goes well, we will have Epics out in less than two months..is just insane. I'm so dying to know how many Tattoos are going to be in the beta pool. I'm feeling REAL good I made the early leap a couple years ago. Thanks Jim, Jared and the rest of the Red team.
