  1. #1 RedRocket and Avid
    Just need to know if the redrocket card can be integrated into the avid system. I call Red in England and they ask me to check with Avid. So Michael any comment on my question. Planing a new feature with Red and I need to know where I stand. Thanks

    Francois, I found it pretty hard to get some comprehensible info, but here's some of the stuff I found out:

    - The Rocket card needs the physical space of an x16 PCI-e slot with at least x8 electrical (beware: this can be very different between different machines)
    - The SDI connector card does not require a connection slot, but it does need the space of a bracket (it's an additional BNC bracket that you connect to the Rocket card);
    - The Rocket card runs on Mac OSX 10.5 or XP Pro 32 (Vista to come, according to Red);
    - The Rocket Cine-X software is Mac only;
    - Currently, Rocket Cine-X on the Mac does not do 1080/24.000p to Avid MXF (it does 23.976p), not sure about 25p; Michael wrote here earlier that this should be fixed pretty soon;
    - Processor speed is of some influence, RAM needs to be at least 2GB, more might be better, drive speed & drive connection speeds are absolutely of importance for the rendering speed;
    - Under ideal circumstances, you will be rendering Avid MXF mediafiles in realtime;
    - Rocket Cine-X will be able to send a lot of metadata along, it supposedly is very complete in that regard;
    - When I ordered the card last Monday night, I received it as early as Wednesday morning (International Priority), they had told me they have the cards in stock, and they rushed it out as soon as they had receive my payment. That's faster than most computer stuff I order online locally...!

    So in order to see if it works with Avid, you would need to be on a Mac, not need 24.000p today, and have the right type of slot available for the card (plus the space for the BNC bracket).

    You might want to use a separate workstation, so you won't tie up your editing machine when transoding, and if you happen to have an older spare CPU with the right slots, that would probably make for a nice Red dailies station.

    So, it's all still in progress, and I don't think there's an actual complete solution at this point in time, but we seem to be getting there.

    Also, what is meant by "integrated" into the Avid system? I am running ROCKETCINE-X and card on a Mac just fine. There will be a slot issue if you are on Unity, Avid hardware, ROCKET card, graphics card, etc. But that is an Apple issue not adding more slots. An HP z800 has more slots, but as Job says, no software on PC yet.

    If the question is integrated as to be used as I/O for Media Composer, the answer is no. Currently the card take R3D as input. It does not allow integration into the Media COmposer pipeline for playback.

    What I am looking at is to achieve the same as FCP where you cut with FCP and go to colour and grade the R3D, via proxies of course but its directly linked to the R3D in any K the film has been shot (if I am not mistaken of course) as for avid we have to go the the DS system. My tool of work is avid and wished that with the redrocket we could stay within the Nitris or Nitris symphony for the grading using the R3D files, Is their a chance that this possibility will happen in a near future.

    Hi Job,

    One very small correction...

    The Rocket card itself also works on Windows7 x64. That is what SCRATCH v5 runs on, and that is the OS behind Rocket Fuel.

    Best,

    There's a couple things happening here. MC/Symphony are currently HD frame size and color space (4:2:2). Is HD/REC709 your final deliverable? So you woiuld like to have REDROCKET debayer, scale, and do a REC709 color space conversion for that deliverble within the application?

    Thanks Lucas, any additional info like this is appreciated.
    Would be best to have this included on the Red support site, which only lists Win XP32 and Mac OS drivers (and Linux Red Hat).
