The "wobble problem", "jello-cam", whatever you want to call it is not an issue with RED cameras due the speed of the read/refresh rate of the sensor. Rolling shutters only create this problem when they scan down the sensor too slowly. In fact, as has been pointed out on here many times, a film camera actually has a "rolling" shutter.

Iv'e seen lots of red footage, and only once I noticed the wobble effect. However. That effect becomes exponentially more apparent when you try to stabilize shaky footage in the editbay. I HOPE that either the brain, or some of the red lenses will have image stabilization options. Please tell me that the electronic canon mount will enable IS to function....

This is borderline dubass request, but it would be cool to have a kind of "app store" for epic and scarlet. Imagine making -approved- small scripts or apps that run on camera, making a special feature. This could make the cameras get alooooot more useful features that if all must be coded by red people. And then you can just enable the features you need and turn off the rest saving process power in camera and saving battery.

Example apps:
-Anti theft GPS tracking app
-Live mode app, syn of mutiple cames, low res streaming, propagating settings, etc.
-MoCap data collector and app for integrating in to 3D scene/SFX
-"Default locked" cameras for rental, all cameras must have wifi (internet) and download a key to start, so solen cameras are completely useless.

..but if you don't want that, you can just not use the app ;)

Less new features = Less unexpected problems.

This would go against the philosophy to slow down on updates and test them extensively before launch.

This would introduce, yet again, instability and crazy problems to the camera. And I guess this problem that can hurt RED's reputation yet again should stay in the past.

I think RED has its hand busy enough with all of this going on, that will continue to go on.

Interesting thought. Does the 8x fixed lens have optical image stabilization, by any chance?

Having read Pierce Cook's summary of the information here, I don't think this has been asked yet-

Regarding the touchscreen LCDs- will they work with a stylus/finger, or just a finger? I ask because I have rather large hands, and things like iPhone touch screens are a real nuisance for me.

Quite agree with you Nils. A bit lost myself on the different specs. Scarlet S35, EpicX...
But agree again that's awsome...

Jim made a post a while back stating that framerates are what cost money these days so yeah, the $21,000 is mainly for faster framerates. The Epic S35 does 250fps at 2k though, which is some serious slow mo.

If you need to do high speed at full res the Epic is the only way to go.

• Scarlet S35 @5k = 30fps (sustained) 72fps (bursts)
• Epic S35 @ 5k = 100fps sustained

There you go, quite a difference ;).

It would be awesome if Red could someday release a camera for the ~$1-3k market. But given their commitment to quality and their drive to make progress on their slate of professional products, it seems unlikely that they'll be catering to the "prosumer" market any time soon, if ever.

3K for $3k is a wonderful dream, and I think there are a lot of people that would have gone beyond their normal budgetary constraints for this sort of equipment to make such a purchase. But the sacrifices Red would have to make to meet that original goal would hinder what I perceive to be their main goal of meeting the needs of professionals (and their own needs as video fanatics) in order to cater to high-end consumers, semi-pros, amateurs, gadgeteers, hobbyists, students, cross-over professionals (e.g., wedding photographers), etc.—many of whom will still be able to afford the 2/3" Scarlet despite the price bump.

Anyone who shoots video for money should be able to pay for a basic Scarlet kit in a year or less. I bought my Canon GL2 several years ago for a total field package price around $3k and it paid for itself with one industrial doc job. Same kind of package for Scarlet fixed would push $10k, but still should be doable for any working pro. Students I am sure will have a hard time making the nut. I sympathize. I have waited for decades for an affordable creative motion camera that could match or better my old 16mm film cameras for image quality. Typical $30k and up 2/3" production cams were not affordable for me. Scarlet is a godsend.

< $4800 for the 8X fixed Scarlet is definitely within the realm of "prosumer". That is less than what I paid for my first HVX200 nearly 4 years ago.

I'm a student. I have the cash in hand for a S35. Worked hard and saved. Guess it depends how bad one wants it :) Most of the students I know always seem to have money for beer...

Too bad Scarlet isn't out. Bought a 5D in the meantime.
