  1. #1 Firmware Request
    - Dear Red Community

First I wanna apologize ahead of time if I have posted this in the wrong area :/. Here's my tale. I have recently gotten a Red One Camera as a graduation gift from my father, he purchased it from someone on craigslist who refuses to answer the numerous phone calls and emails after the sale and I'm stuck with the old build 16.1 firmware :(. I cant log on to red.com for I don't have the user name and password for Red.com. The camera is still registered to whoever my father purchased it from so Red support cant help me either :(. We've attempted contacting him for nearly 2 weeks and nothing... Shady people will be shady?

I really want to update the firmware before I beginning shooting my final project for class which is due by the end of Dec (small drama sketch about life during the current economic recession), so if anyone can please, PLEASE hook me up with maybe an upload or if they're extremely nice, if they'd led me borrow they're account for one min to download the software (they could immediately change the pass after) and the most recent firmware and Redcine-X to export I would be EXTREMELY grateful! and would gladly put you down as a special thanks on all projects I shoot on Red :). I'm looking forward to using this camera up to date at least. So grant my X-Mas wish if you can :).

    - Thanks for reading, Lex

You can download Redcine-X without an account.

If you want an account to download the firmware for the camera may have to pay a fee to transfer the ownership and I think it also may require an inspection of the camera. Your best bet is to shoot an email to the bomb squad or to give RED a call.

Buying a camera off Craiglist is a dangerous business. Have you checked with RED that it is not a stolen camera?

The serial number is under the camera - and embedded in every R3D file the camera generates.

I'd be very nervous, I don't think you have a legitimate sale.

    I'd contact RED ASAP.

I'd also gather together any information you have as to the identity of the seller and all your receipts and other sales documents.

If payment was by check, I'd stop payment until ownership is properly transferred by RED to your name.

    Please keep the community posted.

Spent an two hours on the phone with Red today, nothing has been resolved, apparently the camera was sold 2 times and the property was transferred twice so it may or may not be stolen. The latest user who im going to guess was the seller refuses to answer and now the phone is disconnected, im stuck with this amazing camera and no support for it. Red wants me to "Return" it in for investigation but they are not going to guarantee me im receiving the camera back after inspection if it indeed turns out to be stolen, they are also not going to supply me with a financial backing either so the $10,000 my dad spent on the camera are gone. So I don't think I will be turning in the camera to Red... Im just very pissed and disappointed at the moment, Red wont tell me who the previous owner was so I can get in contact with them, theyre acting as if the Camera that was purchased for me as bought KNOWING it may be stolen and refuse to offer me any help. They acted as if I was the culprit when I too have been swindled. So what am I to do now. Return the camera, lose the 10 large and then what? Lesson learned?... I gave them the registry code on the bottom of the camera and all they say is "well sir, well have to have the camera in our possession before we can give out any information." Wtf does that mean? You want me to return you this amazing camera which my dad spent some his retirement money and not tell me anything? What if I return the damn thing and I don't ever get it back ? I didnt want this to turn into a fiasco, all I needed was updated firmware is that so much to ask >_<.. now I don't know what to do. Any thoughts R-Community.. Ive fallen in love with my Red One, I cant give up my baby.. Strapped it to my car this morning for some tests shots and I fell in love.

$10K for a full Red setup and lenses?

    So what's the serial number?

You do have to look at it from RED's perspective - if it is stolen, somebody has lost more than $17,500. And what if RED told anybody who gave them a serial number whether it was stolen or not? I'm not going to assume that you are dishonest, but I'm sure that many people in that situation would just keep the camera...

Maybe if it was insured and it does turn out to be stolen you can get your money back?

    Hi lex,
You have a really generous and sensitive father, I must say. A great graduation present and I’m not surprised you ve fallen in love with the camera, It does turn out some awesome stuff. Only wish he had done bit of a better background check on that one.

Its great that you’ve been upfront about your doubts on the ownership of the camera. That said, I’m sure you ll be able to appreciate the possibility that it could have been stolen off a previous owner, who obviously would have been very much in love with his/her ‘baby’ before being relieved of it. Pretty painful.
It would be the right thing to do to make sure that the camera is legit. I d suggest Posting your serial no. here on reduser or dropping a line to jarred, brent. I’m sure they’d be happy to help you out. I know this is a tough one, being your dad s retirement money and all
    goodluck
