OK I had another nightmare of a shoot today for extended transitions where an overlay mode would have made things a THOUSAND times easier to match the frames.

Although I will be using Epics for larger effects jobs, there has been so many occasions where I just go out on my own picking up single shots, plate elements etc...in this case I would like to take a 2/3" scarlet kit of a fixed and interchangeable.

I can't BEG for this feature enough in the Scarlet, although I am ecstatic about what we are potentially getting as it is, is there a good reason its not a feature in the 2/3"?

I think that frame overlay is a very important function for scarlet projects.
In particular for Matchmoving and Greenscreen shots.
And for the same reason i would have the possibility to load an external image reference.

    Thank you.

I'm probably on my own here, but personally I'd actually prefer to see this feature over the HDR on the Scarlet.
Don't get me wrong the HDR sounds awesome, but if anything, I'd say that that's the feature that should be kept for the higher priced models. So considering they've placed this feature into the Scarlet, I see no reason why they wouldn't add overlay.

I agree too. A frame overlay would be more useful for me than HDR.

well, hdr is already being built in... that's not going to change at this point i don't expect. the frame overlay for the scarlet should just be a firmware thing... im gonna safely guess it has the capabilities.

I've been crying about it for some time. Sure it is something that not everyone would use, or often but I would and often.

For me and my work it would save so much time, just as much as HDRx would.

Okay, here's a quick recap of all the suggestions/discussion:

This thread started about a year ago :) in response to Ted talking about the Epic frame overlay feature, and saying it might be a possibility for Scarlet as well, if there was interest. There certainly is some interest...

The purpose of the discussion as I see it is twofold.

    A. Suggestions for implementation/use (Epic/Scarlet)
    and
    B. Desirability to have those same features in the 2/3" models

DESCRIPTION: Frame Overlay is the ability to, well, overlay a frame over the monitor feed. It could be anything from a toggle between frames, to some kind of blending mode overlay. It is used for different types of continuity between shots. We'll talk more about specific uses below.

    A. Suggestions For Implementation

Load frames to temporary, built in memory on camera.
    or
Load frames from CF card/SSD, WiFi/Ethernet etc.

    Choose previous frames
    and/or
Load TIFF/JPEG etc. (this one is big)

    Toggle/Wipe/Opacity/Blending

    Suggestions for Use

Matching (composition/lighting/etc.) old footage, shot by others.

    Matching storyboards/pre-vizualization/artwork.

    Shot matching for storytelling purposes.

Non-linear shooting, matching shot to shot (Continuity).

    Reshoots, Pickups, etc.

    Extended Dissolves.

    Matching Horizon/Perspective Lines.

Returning to a location at different time/day where the shot needs to be the same. i.e. seasonal timelapse

    Most Visual Effects shots.

Matching two takes without the use of a motion rig.

    Matchmoving/Greenscreen shots.

    Matching plates/artwork/matte paintings.

    3D (for its unique DOF)

    To be continued...

    B. Desirability

This seems to be a very desirable feature on both Epic and Scarlet. The most essential use of it will likely be for visual effects work. It is highly foreseeable that the 2/3" models will be used for FX work, and 2nd Unit Photography. Also, the slightly deeper DOF and extremely small configuration makes them high candidates for Stereo3d work. Being small and cheap gives it a lot of advantages to be used in extreme conditions and for Special/Visual Effects. Not to mention lower budgeted productions. I'm getting a Scarlet Fixed and plan on doing some very intense VFX work with it.

    FINE al coda

Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any other suggestions, and/or corrections - anything that will make it more accurate or concise. Thank you!

From here on, I'll make edits to the original post #1 in this thread, to keep the pertinent information easily accessible & sticky.

[I will shut up about that one day!!!]

#21 is much more special than that...
Which is really cool. I just want it in the Scarlet.
