I'm in Europe and have only just come across this, but maybe in the states you have had it for a while.

It is a feature on alot of new Samsung HDTVs called 100hz motion plus. It strips films and tv shows of most of their motion blur... making a classic 35mm film look like a bad soap opera. Worst of all, it is a default setting.

Has anyone else seen this in action? It is awful and hopefully not a trend that willl stay.

Yeah when I bought my HDTV a couple years ago there was a full day where I thought one of my favorite TV shows must have fired their DP or something half way through the season because everything looked cheesier. lol. I got through 2 DVDs before a light bulb went off in my head and found the "Motion Enhancement" setting.

i think they're up to 640hz on the latest models. sometimes it looks so real that it becomes unreal to me. there's something hypnotic about the look but it also pulls me out of any film. it's mostly for viewing sports and videogames so i have no idea why these tv makers feel the need to make it the default look.

I have been told that it is a not-so-subtle move to get the rising generation of viewers "predisposed" away from the 24fps film look, so that at no point does anything have a look but that of higher frame rates. It reminds me of this all-consuming push for everything 3D ;).

I despise the "motion-flow" "motion-plus" etc. interpolating myself.

I've turned that option Off on my set. Impressive how videoish it looks like when enabled!

Yea, it is scarily good how well it can make a great film look like it was shot on a 1/3" camcorder....

now, if they can just make it do the opposite... motion-minus anyone?

But...it could conceivably support LCD shutter glasses and make for an in-home 3D experience without buying a new TV.

Was in selfridges the other day and they have that philips cinema tv...they got that motion plus thing running and "I am Legend" playing on it...
The screen below it I think doesn't have it on, but its annoying because when you've stood there seeing the smooth playback, it looks annoying but look down at the screen without it and you can notice jumps in a frame sometime, so it'll jump a frame ahead and then back and continue playing afterwards...

Lots of people though commented on how the one that didn't have motion plus looked good and why the rest of those with motion plus, no one knew what the hell motion plus was, were going on about how crap it all looked and why they were like that...needless to say...I only switch it on for MW2, though when I was buying my Sony they seemed so damn keen on advertising it as a standard to must use as default O.o

This is a crowd dividing trend in recent home cinema -

To my eyes it looks hideous - I was in a Best Buy the other month, watching x-men 3 for a moment on a 240hz TV.

If I was one of the special effects artists on that film, I would have slit my wrists right there and then. Every composite, effect, greenscreen, explosion looked so hideously amateur. It was actually incredibly horrifying to look at. It boggles me that a change in sample rate could create that much destruction in my perception of 'quality' of motion picture experience..

Also, on another occassion, I was watching Dexter with some high hertz enhancement on, and it seemed to be doing morphed frames on the fly to the original broadcast - I could see all kinds of bizarre little artifacts that I'm used to from doing re-times on 30p 5d footage.

All in all this a very strange trend, yes, I'm sure driven by the football and gaming market.

A lot of people seem to like it as Imran has said. Call me an old school 60hz guy, but I absolutely hate it.
