  1. #1 Cost of Scarlet
I'm working on an article that covers cameras roughly $10,000 and lower. The 2/3" Scarlet with the fixed lens falls into that category, but what about the next level up, the 2/3" Scarlet with a separate lens? With a small zoom and whatever basic modules and LCD or viewfinder needed minimum, would the costs come under $10,000?

When I put together my Scarlet package, the cost added up to around $7000 for a basic shooter package. The body is around $3000 so another $7000 for accessories is plenty so the 2/3" will certainly fit into your article.

    2/3" body
    5" LCD
    Redmote
    Side CF module
    Scarlet Adapter
    I/O module
    Battery module
    Side handle

    Total: $9,650

That is pretty much everything that you are going to need in a camera package if you decide to rent lenses.

Of course, there's no lens in that package. I wonder what the cheapest zoom lens that will be available for that camera?

Are you considering new lenses only? Or are used ones acceptable for your under 10k limit? Perhaps the Cinema model with a set of mini-primes?
Something like a used Cooke 9-50mm from a reputable dealer runs around 3k-5k. Stretching the limit perhaps for a practical field package. Lesser Angenieux zooms would start around $800 or so in good serviced condition from a dealer like Whitehouse AV. A new low end ENG grade B4 zoom starts around 7k plus mount, so would push the camera out of your range.

Here is a sample package similar to what I will take for starters:
    Scarlet Cinema body 2750
Side handle for battery power and control: 950
    Small LCD: 900
    Side CF module: 500
    PL mount:500
    Misc. accessories: 2000
Used Cooke 9-50mm T2.5 and Angenieux 12-240 serviced w/ PL mount adapters: 3000

    Total: 10,600

I would venture to say that with a $10K budget the Cinema is COMPLETELY obtainable. Now these prices could change if RED decided to REALLY bless us by creating a base shooting package, which included all the essentials, i.e.: the 2/3 Fixed kit. That could save us anywhere from ~$700-1000. but we won't know specifically until we come closer to release date. But until then...

    Here is my rendition:

    Scarlet Body: $2750
    2.8" LCD: $900
    Redmote: $550
    Side CF Module: $500
    Battery Module: $1250

    Mini Primes x3: $2850
    (8mm,16mm,25mm)

    Storage:
    16GB CF cards x 4(pack) $1200
    ____________________________________________
    Grand Total= $10000

Have you considered a Canon/Nikon mount with still lenses?

    how about this ;-)

fixed lens (with kit) - $4750
    2/3" interchangeable brain - $2750
    16gb card - $500
    c-mount adapter - $500 *
    c-mount lens/lenses - $1500

    * c-mount might even be standard on the brain... I can't remember now.... if so, that's $500 more for card, tripod, mic or whatever.

Believe it or not I've tossed around this idea MANY-A-Times. If you get the cinema w/the Fixed, you save MASSIVELY on the pieces comprising a useable Scarlet. So then you'd only need to add lenses, as well as storage but you'd have 2 working bodies, you also get the benefits of using the Fixed i.e. pull focusing via lens, etc. I don't know maybe.
