  1. #1 Camera Noise While Shooting - Not Fan
I was wondering if anyone else has had camera noise, production sound recording issues when shooting with the RED Camera?

Specifically for me it is not the fan noise that is problematic but the sound of the processor (I'm not sure if this is exactly the correct description of what is happening or what part is making the noise???) as it 'rumbles' processing the data as it records. It is a sound like what you get with a computer when you hear the RAM or hard drive working.

This is a recurring problem no matter camera proximity to the boomed mic in interior locations as it is inevitable to pick up sound 'contaminants' within the room while recording.

Does anyone have/use a sound blimp/barney for their camera?
    How does this effect overheating?

Maybe I just have a noisy camera??!!

    Thank you,

    James.

If you're using the RED Drive, there's going to be some noise, but not much. IIRC, that's the only component with serious moving parts, besides the fans in the camera itself. RAM/CF Cards don't make any noise.

To be honest, you're more likely getting interference somewhere else in your audio loop if you're hearing non-fan noise more than a few feet from the camera.

    We are using CF cards.

And there is definitely something noisy in the camera as it is recording the data.

Also you hear the noise as you stand beside it. Even if you are not using sound.

It is a very noisy camera for sync sound use.

Acoustic noise is produced by moving parts. On the Red, that is the fan and the hard drive, and any separate F/I/Z motor drives you might have added. A rumble could be from any of those. In general, fans make high pitched whines and white noise, but some fans can rumble if the bearings are worn.

If you've got a rumble while recording to CF cards, and you're not using wireless focus, your fan may need to be replaced.

I would love to hear the sound of RAM working ;)

The only noise our R1 makes is a little click when you switch on/off the Phantom power, and of course the fan. Has your camera been exposed to a dusty environment, in which case the dust might clog up the fans?

(Is there a user-serviceable way of cleaning the air vents? I know the new cameras have them.)

I will have to post a link to a sound file so you can hear it.

If no one else is experiencing this, it might be a problem with my camera. If it is the fan it is a very strange fan indeed.

Definitely post that sound file if you get a chance. Don't compress it too much, as it will become hard to analyze.

If you're shooting CF, I'm definitely guessing you've got some crud in the fans. It may be a stupid question (And I apologize if it seems insulting) but you do have the camera set to "Quiet Mode"? (Or whatever it's called. Turns off/down the fans when you hit record)

Can't really hear much other than room/fan noise and what sounds like a printing press a long way away. If the clicking noise is not some distant machinery but in fact your RED ONE; time for a service!
