monitoring off Red Rocket?

I was wondering if anybody has been monitoring directly off the Red Rocket card? Reading various threads here it seems that nobody is actually doing this.
That is to say it doesn't seem like people are hooking monitors directly to the Rocket card. I understand its only 8 bit and without the breakout box connections are limited to the funny little splitter DVI? cables that came with the card.
Anyway, I have been reveiwing rushes on RocketcineX 1740 on my Apple 30" Cinema display running off the ATI graphics card. When I hook the monitor directly to the ROcket Card using one of the outputs on the card and one side of one of the splitter cables I get a black screen no matter what i do. Also have tried from REDCINE-X 104 and get the same results when I select to monitor directly from the Rocket card. Also should note that I can only get about 11-15 fps speed out of REDCINE-X at full resolution(I have latest quad-core Nehalem) but full frame rate on RocketCine-X.

So just wondering what people are doing for best monitoring results?
Is there anyway to involve Kona cards. I have a Li-Ro installed.
Can REDCINE or REDROCKET use this sort of card for monitoring?

I don't know where to start on this.

Jeff, a lot of people are monitoring off the card. I'm not sure I really understand your problem. The card itself, without breakout box, has DVI outputs and 2 HD-SDI's...all of which work.

No using Kona as part of this. Separate totally.

I run one of two monitors off the redrocet. one i get 8bit color, the other 10bit color monitoring.

Dell U2410 connected via DVI connector at times
Most of time (recently since i just purchased this): dreamcolor monitor running out HD-SDI to AJA converter---that then goes out HDMI to the dreamcolor monitor from REDROCKET HD-SDI out--for 10bit color work.

Finally, i can run via DVI out to my 42" LCD from the rocket---but have actually not much need for this---usually i grade all first, then transcode to prores 422 or 444, then run off my matrox MXO2LE direct to my LCD (w/color correction tools) to view final output.

So, yes, using regularly the redrocket card out via DVI and HD-SDI with great results.

Okay I think I maybe understand what I might be doing wrong.
But then again maybe not... but here goes

This from the REd Store about Red ROcket
Plays full quality realtime 4K to 4K monitor or projector from DVI output (requires RED BREAKOUT BOX).
Plays full quality 2K/1080P scaled from 4K footage out the Dual Link HD-SDI from RED Rocket card.
Plays full quality 2K scaled from 4K footage realtime through system graphics card and monitor.

I do not have the capability to hook up to the HD SDI outs yet so have been trying to make this work from the DVI outputs. My monitor has a single DVI cable which I am attaching to one of the four possible choices( when I hook up the splitters to each of the 2 DVI outputs) and I can not get any picture direct from card when running Redcine - X.

SO from the Red store description it seems that the only way to do this direct from the card is either via the HD SDI outs which then requires some thing like the AJA converter that John mentioned or via the Dual DVI outs which requires the breakout box.

The only way that would work without either of these two additional items is to watch 2K scaled from 4K through the system graphics card as Red store indicates (and as I have been doing).

You should be able to connect your DVI monitor through the RR card via the slingle to dual splitters that RED supplied you with. You don't need the breakout box for this....the dual splitters is for connecting to the breakout box and running all four to it in order to then go out to a 4k monitor. Also you should be able to run out of your HD-SDI out --again supplied by RED and to a monitor that supports HD-SDI OR you connect it to an HD-SDI to HDMI converter like AJA makes to then run HDMI into your monitor if it supports HDMI input which most new monitors do these days.

if you are not able to view from your redrocket card and the DVI, maybe you are not setting up properly via redcinex and rocketcinex....you have to set up your monitor and make some choices within the software.

Jeff, check out Sanjin's setup using RR card, Dreamcolor and Aja box....i have the same setup and works very nicely.

Beware that a lot of monitors don't work with the refresh rates of the Rocket. The Dreamcolor does, but when I hook up a cheap monitor directly through DVI it only works with 60Hz, which the Rocket only does at 720p. You have to set this in the Rocket monitor out panel.

I found that my older Dell 2405FPW monitor which is a 1920X1080 monitor will only work with two settings on the "monitor out" window on REDCINE-X: either 1280X720 RGB8 or surprisingly 1920X1200 RGB8 but nothing on the 1920X1080 settings.

I don't understand this but then I guess I don't have to. Its working so thanks everyone.

Some monitors support very few framerates and resolutions and other like some of the high end NEC monitors seem to support practically anything.
