I haven't had a chance to look at any camera audio off the RED yet but have a few questions. Is the audio essentially just PCM 24bit/48kz or is there a proprietary format which then gets extracted in Post to be BWAV? If it is natively BWAV format is does it employ the BEXT chunk to store standard Metadata. If not can standard BEXT chunk info be embedded as audio is extracted to BWAV in Post? This would of course be derived from the camera metadata - TC, Scene, Take, Tape ID, slate, etc.

Planning to do some testing with this later in the week but any help from the experts would be much appreciated.

The RED audio is 24-bit 48K and it is recorded in the R3D file. It is not a seperate file. you have to extract it from teh R3D.

Thanks David. So when you extract the audio from the R3D (presumably to BWAV) is there any provision to embed additional metadata from the picture clips to the audio other than at clipname/filename level?

How do you extract only the audio from R3d-files?

I've managed to extract the audio from the proxy files using QuicktimePro, but the audio-qualtiy of the proxyfiles is really bad. When playing back footage on the camera the audio sounds just fine.

I've also tried using redcine-x, rocketcine, redalert & redrushes (on OSX Leopard) but in none of those applications there's an option to extract audio only or adjust the audio export settings, nowhere...

I would like to know if you can record a 5.1 audio track in this .r3d format, can it also do PCM?
