I don´t know where to post this, i guess in this section of the forum is fine.

Have a look at with a black background (i use irfan view for this).

If you are using a dreamcolor in 709 or sRGB I bet the chart looks quite good.

Still, can you see the difference between 97 and 100?

It's in his post. It doesn't need to be high resolution if all it is is greyscale squares.

I have a Dreamcolor and am also having difficulty seeing 97 after calibration to 709 specs. Other monitors show it fine - also the Dreamcolor will show it if set to sRGB. But then it's a bit brighter than spec.

Other colorist folks - when your setup is properly calibrated, can you see the difference between 97 and 100?

how are you guys calibrating the dreamcolor?

we have an eyeone tool that came with it (bought it used), but can't find the driver or software needed for it (link anyone?).

    any tips/tools would be appreciated.

You can get the software from xrite website. It´s a must.

I can barely see the difference between 97-100. It´s very subtle but it´s there.

I can see very easy and also good 97 and 100.

But there are several steps that you should consider using HP DreamColor monitor.

    1. First you should (or must) calibrate HP DreamColor with Eye-One calibrator unit that is sold/provided by HP and of course strictly follow the instruction.

    2. This calibration works only as a basic (good for HD-SDI, HDMI preview, etc...).

    3. But when you use a computer that has an appropriate graphic card you need an additional calibration and you have to use your system (Mac/Windows/Linux)

calibration TOOL to get your desired look (to watch your "holy" charts, etc,..).

Just try it out, adjust a bit gamma and then you'll get it.

On HP it will appear after save and exit at menu as a User Rec709 calibration.

Here "User" means exactly "variables" of a chart provided by you as a proof of your adjusted calibration (want to see also 97 and 100 on your chart).

Yep, have that. Used that. Latest versions of firmware + software.

The "calibrated" 709 shows less difference between 97 and 100 than the "factory" 709 (both look practically identical otherwise).

Yes, can get it if we tweak the gamma or push brightness above the normal level. Or if we use a slight LUT on what is feeding the Dreamcolor the data. (eg in the video card / software).

    Your signal path is:
Kona SDI or RedRocket SDI -> AJA Hi5 -> Dreamcolor (via HDMI)
...right? Do you still get good distinction between 97 and 100 if your signal path is:
Video card -> Dreamcolor (via DVI) ?

I guess I'd need to try using HDMI or Displayport instead, but AFAIK there shouldn't be much of a difference until operating systems actually support 10-bit color properly. Until then, I'd need to do the SDI -> AJA Hi5 -> Dreamcolor route, I guess?

    Bruce,

I said that there are two different ways of using HP or whatever else wide gamut LCD monitor.

Again one is when you use it "independent" with your HDSDI, HDMI out from camera like RED or video graphic card like AJA, BM, BlueFish, REDRocket, etc,...

And the another one is using with your desired computer system (Mac, Windows. Linux).

With my computer HP is connected with DVI port (directly), that means in this case for viewing of provided chart (blacks at 97-100).

Also monitor is connected to computer via AJA 3 HDSDI out to Hi3G HDSDI in and then from that to HDMI in that is totally different.

latest firmware and latest software don't work on Windows7 ...

Anone knows who to contact in HP for support? ... X-Rite replies that they do not support the software (or the product) ... and forget about HP regular support: they have asked why would one want to update a monitor's firmware !!
