So guess my target for Epic FF35 is being scheduled for 2013 I suppose... if today we see MX and Epic S35 is a year+ away... so I have to update my business plan...

I have a better name for the Arri camera - Arri GOLD :-)

"Alexa is a feminine form of Alexander, which comes from the Greek, Alexandros. It can be broken down into alexo meaning "to defend" and aner, meaning "man"' making both Alexa and Alexander mean defender of man." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexa_(name)
Hi Jim
Even though Evangelos is definitely inferring with little real evidence and his conclusions are easily challengeable by someone like you.. ;-) I have to defend this kind of tenuous ill informed deduction. We all need to make basic plans and there is not a lot to go on. I appreciate the problem for Red is when people do this kind of thing publicly and it goes unchallenged.
The average Red user is maybe ser number 4000?... It feels like a very real question to whether they could have an Epic S35 (from Option 3) before March 2011. Many of us wouldn't want to bet on this.
Interesting times!
thanks
Michael L
PS Also most of us probably believe Arri will miss their scheduled release date. It is not a challenge unique to Red.
Strange.........I "deduced" that the S35 MX Epic would be out this Summer.
Maybe Evangelos is just trying to keep the anticipation from running off with him; I know it can take a lot of effort keeping all of the enthusiasm in check. Personally, I've been happy to hear that Jim is resolved to deliver Epic this summer. That coupled with working prototypes are really good signs.
Michael makes a point though, with R1 owners getting priority there seems to be good reason to be skeptical about availability, however with Red preparing to launch multiple models to a potentially larger market... With each of those models sharing so many parts in common, it seems reasonable to take the assurances of delivery in quantity seriously. For those reasons I'm betting that there will be a camera available for me when I'm ready to come looking for it.
I am in line for an Epic-X and an M-X upgrade for my RED one. If i would make a time estimation judging by the way things move with the M-X upgrades i would say that my RED #1473 is going to be upgraded around July and my Epic-X would arrive Christmas 2010.
Of course with RED you never know when you are going to be surprised so i don't think a lot about it. My RED one is producing greatness as it is.
I make software for a living. The client always wants me to hit a specific date. This is a very bad approach to engineering.
1. You can't predict how long it takes to engineer something great. You can force a product out by a date at the expense of quality, but if you want to make something that is truly excellent, there is an unpredictable amount of time required to iterate on it.
2. You can't predict how long it takes to engineer something solid. You can force a product out by a date at the expense of stability, but if you want to make something that is truly excellent, there is an unpredictable amount of time required to iterate on it.
When my clients insist on hitting a specific date, the end product suffers as a result. Thanks to Jim, Red is in the unique position of being unfettered by this constraint. Red's products are great not by accident, but because they are able to focus on excellence over timeframe. In my opinion, it sends the wrong message for us as customers to exhibit impatience.
Red One-M is already an incredible camera, at an incredible price. Red One-MX even more so, by all accounts. If Epic winds up coming a season later than anticipated, or even a year later than anticipated, we should continue to appreciate what we already have, and count ourselves lucky that the time is being taken to get the next one right.
Epic could ship this year: I'm sure the actual timing depends on what Red discovers as they iterate on the prototype, and on what feedback they get from Tattoo owners. I know that everyone at Red working is hard to achieve a 2010 release. But as much as I want to know when Epic #997 will be in my hands, and as encouraging as it is to see a real prototype, I'm not going to ask Red to commit to timeline. They're smarter than that, and WE should be smarter than that too.

Boo yah! CLues and Hints abound folks... Seems they are on track to deliver Tattoo at NAB, Epics rolling out in June - July and at that point, I remember Ted saying they can produce 7000 units a month with increased capacities.
So there aintt going to be no long waits once production begins.. and after that, its all about brains and sensors... I/O Modules, Battery Modules etc, all stay the same.
Modularity is the beauty of the system and SO WORTH THE WAIT!
