  1. #1 5K workflow help needed
    Hi,
I'm assuming this is part of the Tattoo program, but I didn't even know that had been started yet.

I've just been told I'm going to be getting some 5K footage to work with in the next couple of weeks. When asked if it was actually 5K I was told yes, definitely Epic 5K footage.

Is the Tattoo program up and running? And if it is, what is the workflow for 5K? I'm completely familiar with almost every 4K pipeline workflow, so I'm just looking for the differences between 4K and 5K - hopefully using RedCineX/FCP/Clipfinder/Color. Final delivery is HDCam SR 4:2:2.

    Thanks,
    Stuart Smith

Someone is blowing sunshine up your skirt... TATTOO program has not started yet.

If it is truly 5K Epic footage from one of the prototypes, then whoever is supplying it will be able to help provide the necessary support tools if something special is needed (like a special build of Redcine-X). But it's possible that 5K support may be incorporated into the mainstream build by the time TATTOO cameras ship out the door. Most likely, you're getting told that you'll be getting footage from a TATTOO camera and that someone is optimistic to be shooting with that camera in the next couple weeks. We can only speculate as to when that will be. Jarred commented in the Meet Charlie thread that TATTOO program was still some time away and that was just a few days ago. I'm hoping the TATTOO program fires up in time for NAB or by the end of April.

Workflow will be the same as with any other REDCODE format, once the tools support it. Look for REDCINE-X and ROCKETCINE-X support first, then SDK support and other tools to follow.

If you do in fact get some 5k footage, check with DANCAD3D. He is working on a "freeish" 6k post workflow software. Just sayin'.
One camera is a shoot... two or more is a production.

Thanks, that makes complete sense if anyone had access to this technology they would be given the tools to use it.

Don't know about the smoke thing - funnily enough I was wearing a kilt yesterday, you're not calling that a skirt are you? :) - that's why I asked if Tattoo had been started.

I'm skeptical also, but the VFX house that came to us is a company that we've dealt with for years and is also at a level that they're not going to be involved in something like this without making sure it's legit. They've scheduled time a week from Monday, so we'll see then.

Sorry about the crosspost, the Epic forum isn't getting much use, thanks again.

Thanks Elsie, I appreciate it, I'll keep that in mind if anything does happen

No ill feelings toward kilts. I'm mostly of Scottish/Irish descent... Besides, I was always told that what makes it a kilt or a skirt is the man who wears it.

You can always hope. Prototypes are up and running and I'm sure that they will start making the rounds along with footage from them. If it is for real, then hey, lucky you!

    Stuart,

We have one of the original Matrox Axio HD systems running on the "integrated" HP workstations. One of our guys is in the beta program for CS5 (along with some other very well respected RedUsers on this forum).

We are hoping to have the official "released" version as soon as it's announced (rumored to be during NAB).

We are already wired with the NVidia board.

If you, in fact, get ahold of some material, and care to share, we can put it through its paces on the PC platform. (We constantly worked under various NDA's in case that is an issue for the footage you referenced).

Keep us posted. Happy to help out.

If all goes well, that is almost less than a month away...?

    Jack

Thanks for noticing I exist. I ran some so called 6K scans from an ARRI film scanner through my CC and resized them down for filmout without issues, so that should work.

I think it will go up to one pixel less than 8K from 48bpp TIF files, but I have not tested that yet since there are no 8K RAW cameras working. (there is a memory issue, I did not work around since doing more than about 8K-1 would slow down the lesser resolutions).

If you turn the image 90 degrees you might process 12K frames OK, the limit in DANCAD87.EXE (tm) is the line width, not the height so much. If someone needs to know the max size that will fit I guess I could try some files and see if they work... Just use a swivel monitor for the playback?

Doing uncompressed raw above 8K or so is a bit much today, 4K seems useable, 5K is not too bad, 6K is about twice the processing time of 4K so you would need a good reason to be doing that, 8K, is 4x the processing time and there is no way to project it, so maybe for some VFX shots or something that will be down-sized to 4K or 2K later...

In the de-Bayer program I am working on it will be 32bit, but even so with only 2GB on some computers it may run out of memory for very high resolutions. 5K may work but the new Aaton seems that it is not going to record true RAW, but RGB in DPX downsized from 5K sensor to 4K DPX?

So there are not any 5K true RAW cameras right now that I can talk about...

Where are your 5K output frames going? That is what end size do you need, if its just to downsize 5K to 4K then do the RED programs do that anyway?
Dan Hudgins is developing "Freeish" 6K+ NLE/CC/DI/MIX File based Editing for uncompressed DI, multitrack sound mixing, integrated color correction, DIY Movie film scanning, and DIY Movie filmrecorder software for Digital Cinema. RED (tm) footage can be edited 6K, 5K, 4.5K, 4K, 3K, 2K, or 1080p etc. see http://www.DANCAD3D.com/S0620200.HTM (sm) for workflow steps.

OK, just an FYI, it's taken a week to find this out. Apparently there's a 3rd party involved. They just got the MX chip installed, and someone started throwing around he name Epic for some reason. I knew I was right to be skeptical, thats why I was asking if the Tattoo program had even started.

Glad to hear CS5 is coming along, can't wait to be 64 bit, though plugins may be an issue before upgrading can happen

DANCAD3D looks very interesting, thanks Elise and Dan
