  1. #1 Redcinex or Clipfinder
    Hi,
just a quick question. i'm new to red, and i've started looking at the best workflow for final cut.
for the life of me i can't figure out the difference between redcinex and clipfinder. why would you use one over another?
and also, why would you use final cuts log and transfer option instead?

    cheers

Clipfinder in any case to do conforms to and from whatever, be it RCX or Color or whatever

RCX is quite beta still (though a very promising look into the near future), but you cannot get your cut into RCX without something like clipfinder.

With clipfinder you can do a lot of small and nifty other tricks as well, like segmented background rendering (even with the fre one), fixing Color projects etc etc.

If you are on a Mac/FCS - the Color workflow is for the moment a much better and more flexible chice than RCX.

Have a look at my tests

Clipfinder doesn't work on windows and redcineX is the official red software.
It's amazing how flexible is the red workflow with Clipfinder.

No. They do NOT do the same thing...

They do have some things in common, though....

RCX has more powerfull pre-grading (and simple-grading) tools than Clipfinder. And you can hook up a Tangent Wave to it.

But there's no way to open your FCP XML or EDL from any app in RCX and relink proxy files to the RAW files, without an app like clipfinder.

Personally I think RCX is a bit beta still to really work as it will, but it's quickly getting there. For simple corrections (and with the RedRocket accellerated rendering) it can be a good alternative to Color -which definitely has its quirks.

But for now and for commersial work and stability: Clipfinder

    For the future:
Clipfinder + RCX or some other app.

    Edit:
But Luca is right - as allways...

    Cool, thanks.
also, what are the advantages of using log and transfer in final cut? why doesn't it talk about clipfinder or redcinex in any of the final cut workflow documentation? is it just old.
would you never use final cut like that anymore?

    Also, i'm using clipfinder 2.2.
there is a edit look settings window, but there's no info on this in the documentation. is there any difference between changing values in this and changing them in redcinex? they both have all the same controls.
    thanks

I love Clipfinder but as of right now I can't use it in my workflow like I did on previous builds. I'm on build 30 now and can't use clipfinder for renders. As of right now there is no quicktime color science so rendering in REDCINE-X is the only option for me. Also Clipfinder has yet to take advantage of the RED Rocket I have installed. Once those upgrades happen I'll be switching back. I'll still be using REDCINE but only for color correctiona and LUT creation.

For now you can visualize the changes in clipfinder (Flut etc.) but you can't render directly (when the new redline will be available it will be possible to render the new color science inside clipfinder). With Clipfinder you need redrocket with rocketcineX or use redcineX (also without rocket) or Apple Color for the latest color science.

So i've been doing some test with clipfinder, and redcinex. and i have a couple of questions.
using the same export settings, clipfinder exports HD prores files that look more yellow. would that be because of the colorscience thing. redrushes give's me the same yellowy look too.
also, redcinex uses all my cpu's, but clipfinder only ever uses a max of 6, even when i change the tasks, etc, settings. any clues on that?
thanks for all the help. i'm begining to think red is like quantum physics, if you think you understand it, you've misunderstood something.
