  1. #1 Billy's #13 on Hollywood
Proud Papa Billy with his other new baby, Red One #13, shooting some classic 4K Redcode RAW on Hollywood Blvd. A little bit of nostalgic history really, considering the many Hollywood firsts that have taken place in this spot.

    Very Nice...

So when do we get to see the 4K night shots of the Chinese Theatre?

...Just thought I'd ask the obvious question that everyone will want answered.

Man gotta be careful shooting out of a sunroof. I was shooting like that one time with a BetaCam rig on my shoulder and the driver hit the gas a little too hard and almost broke my back. Wouldn't want that to happen to a brand new daddy.

    Hey Jeff,

You're a techno savant - tell me how to show 4K other than in a landmark 4K theater and we'll do it.

We did a combo of lock offs, dutch whip pans, etc with the RED 18-50 lens WFO. Selected ISO 800 (320 worked well also) and 4300 deg (sodium lighting) recording to the RED 8 GB CF cards.

We're viewing the 4K shots in Redalert right now - sweet!

Working on the Redalert export to QT and DPX frame grabs and looking at the pixel view in photoshop - spy satellite quality.

Billy and I are working on side by side Mac stations. The 4k Redcode RAW images in Redalert are SPECTACULAR on the big screen.

Frame Grab workflow: from Redalert, exported 2K TIFF to photoshop, changed to 8bit and saved as a JPG in highest allowable quality. Went from a 2 MB file to a 320 kb file.

We are viewing the QT file per Jim's quick tip - SWEET!

    Just so you know.

Followed this tip from Jim for the same frame grab and changed from REC 709 Gamma to Linear Light in Redalert for the one light adjustments before exporting 2K frame grab. The rest of the work flow is the same.

Shark. There's something wrong with this grab- There's far to much compresion and a strange aliasing (look at the pole at the right). And it is far from 2K.

Though the general look is nice we would like to see a better version of it.

Ah, and you should use REC 709.

    Thanks

    Concrete,

I wish I could post the 4K image we are seeing in Redalert - it is Stunning! Thanks on the compliment of the look - we love it.

Remember from my previous post, the 2K Tiff manipulation is laid out and is done to comply with the upload limitations of reduser and the internet.

Disclaimer: I am not a downrez/compression expert for RED 4K yet - Billy and I are figuring it out on the fly and sharing the experimental process with y'all for ideas and input. On our browser, the jpg shows no aliasing on the pole - we see the hieroglyphic detail and this at the edge of the lens.

If someone can host the 12 MB 2K tiff original frame grab let me know where and how.

Anyway, as Stu has explained already you should extract a flat, low-contrast, pic from REDAlert!, keeping the most highlight and shadow detail possible.

These kind of images give the maximum space to correct them afterwards.

If you don't find anyone who hosts the pic, you can always use free spaces like www.yousendit.com or (if the pic is under 1,5 MB) imageshack.us.

    Cheers
