Of course one can use it for the latter, but in that scenario something like ProRes would be more desirable. I think we'll hear news of more modules in different codecs coming down the line...
I see, i'm not sure how this hardware works. But if RED can put in a choice to record either in H.264 or Prores. Then this stuff will be very flexible. Most offline work is done in Prores.

The other thing to consider are licenses for the codecs... I'm not sure how one goes about implementing either, but there are probably royalties involved.

I guess a "proper monitor" with h.264 is self defeating. It is 8-bit why bother. Just get a big screen that doesn't crush or clip, a "good monitor".

And still have a laptop with a RED Rocket and a proper monitor for checking looks at full debayer.

How are the 27" iMac screens with glare?

H.264 is such a great idea. I am a big fan of PIX systems and their whole infrastructure is based on H.264.

It is incredible that the same format Canon ( and others) uses for full quality acquisition in the 5D etc. RED is using for dirty offline dailies and proxy video.

I have read ARRI talking about how RED files where so large in size it was a media management nightmare so they came up with the PRORES 444 for dailies. Who wants to tell ARRI that 1080P PRORES 444 files are actually bigger in file size than RED 4K R3Ds?

And who in the heck needs PRORES 444 for viewing dailies?

h264 is exactly what I want here. Small file size and playable on anything.

Way cool. What sort of frame delay is there?

    Exciting stuff!

While I can't wait for the hopefully inevitable ProRes or Avid proxy module, h.264 does make the most sense as a point of departure when you are in the Redcode world.
Maybe the video game is good.
