I've been stuck in a particular post routine for so long I haven't had time or bothered to keep up with the "here today, gone later today" technology. And every time I try too research the Red Rocket I don't get a definitive answer on its potential. Basically, it gives you realtime transcoding of the R3D files to a codec or format of your choice. This is great for smaller (in length) projects, but what if you have about 10-15tb of footage and you want to offline with proxies first. Is there any clean workflow yet that allows you to use the Red Rocket to online based on the proxy offline?

What are some of the best workflows with this? What are some of the best formats people are transcoding to? Why do I need this and how will it rock my world?

If anyone could paint the big picture for me it would be greatly appreciated.

    Respectfully,
    Dale

A question I would like to add as well is, now with the release of CS5 and the Mercury Engine, is there any real benefit to RED Rocket™ anymore?

Yes. Working with rocket gives you full quality debayer in realtime while leaving more cpu/gpu resources open for Mercury Engine.

    couple of questions here..

is the RED Rocket assistance supported on PPro CS5?
if, then will it help the overall debayering of all the tracks playing on the timeline or it will just serve only one track?
will it support direct program output monitoring through the rocket card?

if it does all that then this will be the best and the only way to edit and preview (on external monitor/projector etc) 4K motion image in realtime..
