There's no free lunch....and soon no more free internet TV..
according to this article Hulu will be switching to a subscription model.

"If Hulu can't survive on advertising, can anybody?"

CBS CEO Les Moonves said his company never joined Hulu, the No. 1 online video site for TV shows, because the ad-only business model didn't make sense."I'm only getting pennies online compared to the dollars I'm getting at the networks," he said.

Companies get $920 less per one-hour show for every 1,000 viewers that watch it on a PC instead of TV, Soleil Securities said in a report last year.

Moonves says it costs $3 million to produce a single episode of CSI.
"If too much of my audience shifts and there's still pennies watching online, I'm not going to be able to produce that premium content," he said at the cable show.

Yeah. We need more reality, talent, and game shows for primetime tv.

Thus Online vs Network TV result in approximately $1/viewer-hour LESS for IPTV. So for straight advertising you need to increase viewership 10 times for it to me more profitable.

Does this also account for decreased distribution costs?

Oh I'm all about the game shows... here's to bringing back "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?".

Actually, I don't even have cable, so hopefully something like Hulu can make it's way up here (Canada) before they realize it's financially unsustainable and start charging for eps a la iTunes...

Sad news, indeed. I just dropped all my satellite and moved to the net.
