I've been quite happily using Black Magic cards in our Final Cut systems for several years, but quite likely will have to replace them with Kona.

I wrote to Black Magic to see if they were prepared for RED footage and received a reply that essentially said they had done nothing; they asked me what format RED footage was...

Perhaps I just reached a tech who was out of the loop, but it doesn't sound good to me.

Does anyone have other information on this?

    Good shooting and best regards,

    Leo

Red have a close relationship with AJA (Ted used to work there) but not as far as I know with Blackmagic. I suspect AJA will have Red support before Blackmagic does. Ted pretty much said this to me at IBC, although as is the Red way, he gave no specifics!

I certainly hope there is support from BMD soon too, as I have a Decklink card in my Octo Mac Pro.

Black Magic has a history of being out in front on developments, but I'm very discouraged by the email I received from them which pretty much said, "what's that?"

I'm planning right now to replace the BM cards in December unless they really get on board.

I don't know if they have not attempted to get the codec information from RED/Apple or if they tried and were put off. Either way, it certainly seems to me that both RED and Apple are firmly backing AJA.

AJA seems like the smart bet at this time.

    Good shooting and best regards,

    Leo

For what it's worth. I was talking to a VAR out of LA that told me that Apple's relationship with AJA was incredible. He said that AJA had access to some of Apple's deep code that they hadn't given to anyone else. I don't own either at this point, but was leaning towards the BMD side because of pricing, I'm just glad that others will have tested things before I get to the purchasing point.

BM have got very slack support wise recenty, not huge.. but annoying..

I was at IBC.. explained a situation.. and they guy chuckled and said yeah.. sounds like a bug..

so I mailed support like he suggested.. nothing!

    not good!. We switched..

No comparison between the two as far as support goes. Technical quality, well that may be a little closer and up for argument. I've used both company's products and have had to deal with support on both sides. Not looking to throw anyone under the bus though, so I'll keep it to myself which one is better.

not bias, in my personal experience, AJA responds to questions faster than Blackmagic.

My guess would be that FCP announces 4K support at some point in the future with AJA hardware to solve your issues.

I might be dreaming, but I'll make an educated guess.

You might see a 4K native FCP with a AJA KONA product that will do all of the RT down converts to plug into all of the existing video format deliverables, 1080P, 720P right down to your letterboxed SD master.

It does this with FCP and 2k now so it seems like the next logical step. The bottleneck isn't frame size, it's data rates and REDCODE and at 27mb/sec it is basically SD data rates.

Yeah I suppose AJA have more inside info.. ie HD/IO.. prores on board etc.. but hey BM brought out the Eclipse..

I've found most big companies know what others are doing.

Another 1st for Red there then! lol
