Matthew
There is huge demand, no one wants to rent a camera with the old sensor =/. There should be a premium for the rental on the new mx bodies
Our list price is up about 15% for the MX sensor v/s M sensor, our clients seems to be happy to pay a slightly higher rate for all the improvements the MX sensor represents.
*Based on price for a Basic RED package with EVF/LCD, batteries, charger, disk/cards, (but no optics/tripods/monitors etc.)
I'm not sure how big the demand is really. I don't see many posts on here looking or MX cameras and I've only gotten one call about an MX camera. Trying to figure out if it's worth it considering the Epic is coming out so soon...

Don't upgrade, Matthew! That way there will be fewer MX chips, and I'll continue to rake in the money as people rent mine instead of yours. ;-)
Seriously, having the MX in my camera has generated 2-3x the amount of work, in the short term. I'm not sure it will stay that way for very long, but the people who have shot with it, swear by it. My rental rate went up 20% with the MX, and no one even bats an eyelid, but I'm also one of only a small handful of MX cameras in Utah right now, so there isn't much market saturation like there was 6 months ago. Also, keep in mind, it sounds like Epic isn't "just around the corner" anymore, with the manufacturing setbacks. Hopefully its a short-term setback, but its still a setback.
It really is a worthwhile upgrade. The sensor is phenomenal. The downside, of course, I will probably end up shooting my own project next week on a regular M sensor, because mine went out on a 2 week gig, that is turning into a 3-week gig.
I think this is really market specific. I've had one serious request for it and it was from LA. If people are asking for it upgrade. If not, well... you're not going to get blood from a turnip. People won't pay extra for something they don't know exists - and do you really think you could talk them out of more money for the new chip? Enough money to make the upgrade pay?
I'm not saying it wouldn't be great to have, but if you're asking "will it pay for itself" - that's probably market dependent.
(I'm already pretty well booked for a while so I am waiting for EPIC... if I have a big opportunity arise that requires MX on RED I'll get it.)
All depends on your local market and how RED-savvy the people are in your area. I'm starting to get more calls about MX now here in Denver. But demand around here is real light.. There's a lot of low-cost REDs to rent here in town and I don't try to compete with the bottom-feeders. I do have an MX camera out on a long-term rental, shooting an indie feature, actually close to your neck of the woods, Matthew. And that leaves me without a RED for a while... I bought a second one so I could eventually get two Epic-X cameras, but then sold one of the executed RED Ones thinking that Epic-X was closer than it apparently is. Oh well...
Yeah, definitely market specific it appears. Ive made well over 2X the upgrade cost since April and interest is WAY up as there are a bunch of M-X R1's in Portland.
The problem is that it is still a Red One camera with the inherant disvantages of size and workflow...
I bet there will be a different demand for Alexa. Quite a dogme behavour about lovers and haters of a specific camera manufacturer.
I don't rent mine, but I like the MX so much that I really don't want to use my other camera which is original R1. I was saving it for stage three, but now I am wondering if I should upgrade it anyway, I feel stage three could be quite awhile.
