Has anyone here tried shipping locked equipment cases bare - as in no cardboard packaging? I'm moving west and need to ship a few lighting kits that are in sturdy hard shell cases.
Thanks!

That's how we ship everything. FedEx/UPS might charge you extra though.
UPS dinged me $8 for an "additional handling charge" to ship a pelican case because it wasn't in cardboard.
One would think they would be happy, it had a nice handle and can't rip like cardboard![]()
I ship cases all the time, typically there's no extra charges with fedex. Be sure to pay for full insuance on the gear or have separate insurance coverage for shipping your gear. Nothing says "hey, there's something valuable in here!" like a locked flight case. I typically don't lock the cases, but use zip-ties to help them stay shut. And sadly, I can bust a TSA or Peli-lock just as fast as I can snip a zip tie and so can any thief.
But do have insurance!
Yea, I have to say, I was thinking the same thing about the whole look of the cases... they just scream film production. One is a massive 5 light mole kit with, of course, the big fancy Mole Richard logo emblazoned on its lid. The other is a big Arri kit with a couple of 2K's, equally screaming what it is all over the lid. I might spring for the cardboard after all, but I've discovered I will have to modify a wardrobe box to fit them, LOL.
