where are you in the scarlet program? Is the 2/3" still in the frankie jr. Stage or are there working prototypes?
Any progress on finding a new manufacturing partner?
there are working scarlet prototypes... Epic will be manufactured in the us. Scarlet is still undecided.... At least we aren't saying.

    2.
bomb evf and 64gb cf card schedule? (keeping it short)
we received the first batch of real production evf's in last week. We have 2 weeks more of testing to do, but i can tell you they are looking and working incredibly. Shipping will begin mid july.
64gb cf cards we still are testing and tweaking... And there is no release date yet. We will not release them till they are perfect... We take red recording media very seriously.

    1. When will we see scarlet footage or an r3d?
    2. What is super secret feature #21 and what cameras does it apply to?
    3. Will there be a price drop on the red one in the near future?
    1. We have our hands full. We'll post when we can but there are much more important things to do right now. You'll see footage well before you can buy one. :-)
    2. No sayin'
    3. No. New red ones are very valuable right now, especially with an m-x sensor. We have more demand now than ever for them.

    Jim
    4.
is scarlet meeting your expectations thus far ?
    yes. :-)

    jim
    5.
will you be making a much lighter weight set of red pro primes one day?
I love the price and the optics, but really wish the lenses were not so heavy.
good, cheap, light... Pick any two. :-)
we are always looking to improve. But that is not going to happen next week.

    Jim
    6.
also, will rocketcine continue to be supported - i really liked that program - i like red cinex as well, but definitely find them to have different applications - rocketcine is still better for scrubbing through footage quickly.
we're focussing on one application of that type to get it the best we can. What makes rocketcine better for scrubbing for you?

is there any chance at all that stage 3.5 camera owners will be given a financial incentive to keep their red one cameras?
Perhaps an option similar to stage 2, but without the free modules.
I ask, because it would allow many of us to entertain the m-x upgrade without the fear of having to send our r1 cameras in so soon after the sensor upgrade.
Without this possible option, i am not sure that i can justify the m-x upgrade.
That would be a shame, based on what i have seen from the new sensor.
Plus, i am getting pretty damn fond of my red one.
    under consideration...

    Jim
    8.
any chance we'll see film schools offering official red training and/or support from red in the future?
we indeed are working on expanding the reducation program into an official curriculum for educational institutions interested in such... That is something that ted has been working diligently on for the last couple months.

    Jarred land
    9.
any consideration for a raw module for epic now that portable raw recorders are 4k capable and have come down in price and size?
we think shooting uncompressed raw is nonsense... Especially if you consider a 2.5:1 redcode for epic. I'll bet anyone any amount that can tell the difference without looking at the file size.

    Jim
    10.
1)is there any type of lens mount that scarlet and epic won't be able to use?
2)how much smaller will scarlet's body be compared to the epic?
3)how has the design of the red scarlet been affected by the process of designing and making epic?
    4) learned any lessons while making epic that will make the development process of scarlet a bit faster?
    1. I'm sure there are... But they probably won't be lenses you would want to use. Our open lens format is just that...
    2. Some... Exact detail before we ship.
    3. It has been affected... Delay one one delayed the other. See post #1.
    4. They are really going in parallel.

    11.
so do you think that the scarlett will be available by the end of the year?
    yes.

    jim
    12.
can you give us more info on the red hmi light thing???
no new information to add :)

    jarred land
    13.
so main difference between scarlet s35 and epic-x ?
    Frame rates?
frame rates and data rates... Heat generation and cooling system. Less boards and simpler construction. Several other smaller points but those are the main ones.

    Jim
    14.
any chance of a studio/triax/multi-pin module (and ccu/remote) to make these amazing cinema cameras studio cameras? If not, what is the plan to allow other companies to develop modules? Is there a time frame for a project along those lines?
camera control can happen through wifi/ethernet/redmote/serial.
Way more flexible and powerful than a ccu.

    Deanan
    15.
seconding request for red ray info, please and thank you.
Also, will rocketcine continue to be supported - i really liked that program - i like red cinex as well, but definitely find them to have different applications - rocketcine is still better for scrubbing through footage quickly.
redray is close... Demos going on at the studios now.
All features from rocketcine will end up in redcine-x at some point.

    Jim
    16.
whats the status on the red pro anamorphics?
coming along... Next year. They will be very cool.

    Jim
    17.
will there be a red matte box released with epic?
    yes..

    Jarred land
    18.
will your best redcode actually be mathematically lossless?
    yes. 2.5:1 redcode.

    Jim
    19
    1. How many production epics do you plan to release at a time following the tatoo program?
    2. Will you make an announcement on the forum before the emails start to go out?
    lots.
    Yes.

    Jim
    20.
i know it would just be counterproductive to set a date, but if things go as planned will scarlet be out before the years end?
    yes.

when the evfs are ready to ship, will they be first ordered first served ... Or is there a pecking order?
we have some customers with backorders of the original evf that take priority.. Then it is first come first served.

    Jarred land
    22.
do your engineers foresee a day when a red xxx sensor will have more
dynamic range than even the best film negative?
absolutely... That is why modular matters.

    Jim
    23.
please provide a redray or red 4k update. Last i heard they were supposed to be shipping units january. Haven't heard much since.
always late... But worth the wait. Redray pre-production prototypes are being shown now at the studios. It looks awesome.

    Jim
    24.
scarlet- are the 1/8th inch audio in's going to be preamped?
yes, these audio inputs accept microphone level signals, so they do provide pre-amps.

    Stuart english
    25.
in keeping with my absurd desire to have you guys design a camera at the same time for a parallel market, (studio), will there be anyway to have servo zoom and focus controls mounted on a tripod for lenses that have zoom motors?
the redmote and redmote pro ( as well as the side handle etc. ) will be able to control motors inside lenses such as canon, nikon, fuji, etc... Provided of course you have the accompanied electronic lens mount on the epic/scarlet.

    Jarred land
    26.
on a recent project we shot a scene with enough detail/contrast to apparently overwhelm the data path of an mx r1. Any info on approximately how much more bandwidth epic will have than r1 (it's obvsiously much more based on it's recording specs). The engineer in me would love some detailed info for reassurance that such an issue isn't present in epic.
the difference between redcode 42 and redcode 250. 24fps is about 2.5:1 compression. Mathematically lossless.

    Jim
    27.
    * what sort of compression will we have for stills on epic-x?
    * will there be a dedicated stills file format? Or will it roll the stills we shoot into an r3d file? Either way is fine, but i see advantages to a dedicated stills format that could be directly supported by lightroom, aperture, adobe camera raw, etc..
    * will epic-x be able to do long-exposure shots? The 1s max exposure on the red one is a huge limitation for astrophotography and many time-lapse applications where m-x is just screaming to be used.
    1. Redcode
    2. R3d will have a subset stills format but even more exciting is the 'dsmc' portion of the format.
    3. Yes

    deanan
    28.
i have no interest in prores personally, but there's been so much debate about it... At one point someone indicated that there was official word from red that a prores proxy module would be released. Is this true?
we have not announced anything prores for epic... Although anything can happen. We need to get these cameras finished before we start fooling around with other stuff.

    Jim
    29.
are epic modules and accessories on track so they will readily available when epic ships?
yes. Most of the important ones anyway.

    Jim
    30.
will the red bricks still be available when epic & scarlet are out?
Can you tell us a bit more about the touch focus lcd? Do they work like the iphone touch focus where you have to keep touching the screen to focus or will they be able to do focus tracking whilst keeping subjects in focus at all times?
You've said that epics are getting made in the us - whats your estimation of how many you will be able to produce per month?
    yes to redbricks
    just as you would hope.
Depends on the orders. We expect to sell a lot of epics.

but running multiple cables in a studio/ live imag situation can be troublesome, plus, there is no fixed return or intercom or any of those loved features of a triax system. Any way to incorporate a tally notification?
getting a tally back to the camera is pretty trivial - either via wireless, ethernet or gpi contact closure.

But i see your point about a ccu like controls through a computer- the ability to match the 'painted' look live is key...
hdsdi and ethernet can be multiplexed over fiber.
And audio could be sent over ethernet. There's lots of flexibility to add capability without designing new hardware.

    Deanan
    33.
assuming that redcode 250 stands for "2.5":1 does that equate redcode 42 to "4.2" (or less likely "42") :1
this will be cleared up very soon...

    Jarred land
    34.
so...hdr mode...? Is it going to happen with released epic's?
not on release. Shortly (hopefully) after.

    Jim
    35.
a ff sensor would be nice with the red pro anamorphics. How is the monstro program moving along?
saw 1st images from slice. Impressive.

    Jim
    36.
assuming that redcode 250 stands for "2.5":1 does that equate redcode 42 to "4.2" (or less likely "42") :1
2.5 to 1 is the compression ratio.
    redcode 42 = ~7.5:1
    redcode 36 = ~9:1
    redcode 28 = ~10:1

    deanan
    37.
now that the firmware bug seems under control, what concerns you the most going forward?
how complicated this project is and how little things can bite you in the ass. Not to worry... That's our job.

    Jim
    38.
    another s3d questions:
    A. Will the red-ray (pro) support the playback of stereo r3d footage?
    B. Can we sync two rad-rays (normal) for the playback of stereo r3d footage?
Of course stereo need a lot of work in post before it can be seen properly, but having real-time hw platform to quickly review the raw shots will go a long way in any s3d production...
you can count on 3d support for redray as above. Stuart will elaborate.

    Jarred land
    39.
can you talk more about the bug?
I know it's not particularly relevant now that it has been fixed, and probably over most of our heads, but i'm interested in it because it sounds like a good story...
not going to talk about the bug.

    Jim
    40.
not sure if this has been announced but what is the zoom range for the fixed scarlet?
    ff35 equivalent of 28mm-224mm.

what's the next red camera revolution going to be in 5 years? What future capability are you most excited about that is still only an idea bouncing around your cranium?
since our competitors are finally paying attention... We aren't giving out any future info. But trust me when i tell you we have a lot of stuff lined up.

    Jim
    42.
any even "wishful" eta (or any progress news for that matter) about the 6x17 28k epic brain? Are we talking 2011, 2012+ or never...?
end of 2011 or early 2012. Everything has been delayed unfortunately.

    Jim
    43.
sorry, just to ask again about monstro in case you missed it. I would like to get an idea if the ff monstro sensor will be on course as it has been approx 6 months since mx and this would mean another approx 6 months until monstro...if i remember correctly that is. I am asking as a have an mx red one and singed up for stage 2...but if i am looking at at least a few more months until epic with it's mx brain and then only a few months later a ff monstro brain is here...well i can't afford to then go and buy another brain so soon after. A little information on this would be great, i'm sure you understand where i am coming from. Especially if it was only another 6 months for monstro and on the same timetable for scarlet! Now we are talking...ff monstro for scarlet...
ff35 monstro is trailing epic s35 by a reasonable amount of time.

    Jim
    44.
    1. Have you tested any mini primes?
    2. Any plans for mini zooms?
    1. Yes.
    2. No.

    Jim
    45.
will redmote pro release with epic?
not at the same time as the initial release.

    Jim
    46.
i was wondering, what kind of power options and battery life we could expect from the scarlet 2/3" fixed? It seems like the ideal camera for applications like wildlife filming or otherwise filming in remote locations, so this is something i constantly worry about.
low power draw so a long battery life.

    Jim
    47.
will there be red designed & made wide-screen and tele-photo adapters for the fixed lens scarlet?
not out of the gate.. But others will work ( remember, 8x has standard 77mm threads up front )

    jarred land
    48.
current red one owner and submitted for stage 2!
Just broke ground on our new facility doing live/studio and really hoping to utilize as many as 12 epics. I know to ask for release dates are unrealistic. However, being on a deadline with our facility slated to be finished around feb/mar of next year is it realistic for us to plan on getting that many epics?
    no problem.

    Jim
    49.
will the red-ray (pro) support the playback of stereo r3d footage? ...having real-time hw platform to quickly review the raw shots will go a long way in any s3d production...
the red-ray pro player can play back .r3d footage at up to 4k rgb output resolution, and we can genlock two players for stereo .r3d playback capability.

    Stuart english
    50.
    r3d trimming?
    working on that right now

knowing the great inside stuff you guys know, what feature do you think isn't talked about enough/has the most under respected and least talked about impact/is just rad and you just love?
5k redcode at 120fps. Simple. No matter what is said, this is truly a miracle.

    Jim
    52.
thanks for that one - i am more then happy to wait. That camera will give me reason to revisit all the amazing locations i have been to and motivate me to explore more. This will be my "retirement" camera, if you know what i mean...
Are there any plans for red lenses for this format, or can i start buying up slowly the existing 6x17 glass - and if so, what would be the most likely 3-rd party mount you will support?
    red glass...

    Jarred land
    53.
are you concerned about scarlet s35 cannibalizing epic s35 sales? Aside from increased frame rates why would a new red customer choose epic s35 over scarlet s35?
i'm not worried about anything except getting these cameras done.

Some pros will not understand why anyone would want to buy s35 scarlet and many others will not understand why some would spend the extra just for data rates and frame rates. That's why we will make both. Quite frankly... Those that make money with their cameras will buy epic. The extra capability is cheap if you have a working camera. Epics will be more "rentable" than scarlets.

    Jim
    54.
what's the main reason for getting a red ray/ red 4k. I'm getting it regardless, i buy all you're products, but don't fully underderstand why i should buy one
    a) the delivered images are amazing, even in downscaled 1080p hd, let alone in full 4k resolution.
    B) encoding is trivial, just drag and drop the finished 4k image files (our magic pixies do all the work)

    stuart english
    55.
how are you health-wise? There was a lot of concern about you around here. I know this is probably not the type of question you meant to have asked but it's sincere.
i'm ok... Thanks for asking. Biggest problem i have is 22 year old thinking in a 60+ year old body.

    jim
    56.
    1. Are there any rough projections on how long it will take to complete stage ii?
    2. Are there any plans for internationalization options for epic (and scarlet) so that menu systems can be viewed in languages other than english?
    1. We are bad at projections... Read post #1
    2. Yes.

    Jim
    57.
any details on what modules will be released with the 2/3" package?
all the same modules will be available as with epic. Both cameras use the same interface and modules... Which is why this system is so nice.

    Jim
    58.
there was word of some scarlet updates a month or so ago, but the date came and wend. What was that going to be about?
old info that has been superseded by tonight's info.

    jim
    59.
thanks stu! Follow up question - can we sync two red rockets for the same purpose? I have noticed a lot of "unused" hw connections on the card that could potentially facilitate this - especially given the pedigree...
stereo syncing of rockets outputs isn't possible on the current rocket boards but you can play back stereo from two rockets through a gpu like you currently can in scratch.

    Deanan
    60.
...but what's your stance on 3rd party modules? Will you release a "module sdk", or will you keep it proprietary?
we'll open up after we get the system dialed in and out there...

keeping it brief... Based on what you know from the the activity within red, can we be confident that apple will continue to "play well" (very well!) with red going forward? Thnx.
    we sure hope so... :-)

    jim
    62.
it looks like there is a 1/8" audio in on the epic brain, is that correct?
    correct.

    Jarred land
    63.
does red have any distant future plans to pursue super high-speed frame rates like those approaching what the phantom or weisscam are now capable of?
i think epic gives you 2k at 250fps. Anything more than that needs a specialty camera... For now.

    Jim
    64.
is the fixed 2/3" scarlet still likely to be the first one out of the box? (i.e. Before interchangeable and the s35).
    yes.

    jarred land
    65.
we need service centre in india?
We need red-education program in india?
balaji, you are going to be very happy with what we are working on right now in india...

    Jarred land
    66.
can you confirm what will be used to power the camera in the fixed kit?
sorry guys.. Still to early to answer that, as the answer to that depends on the kit that has not been completely finalized.

    Jarred land
    67.
sorry i know you guys are slammed - but any chance on getting a hint at scheduling for scarlet s35 and scarlet ff35? (see my original question here)
you've advised that "those that make money with their cameras will buy epic" - that isn't entirely accurate. There are shooters who will purchase the scarlet s35/ff35 as their personal equipment, and for production rent epic for the additional benefits. This idea has been bandied around for quite a few i know. I'd not buy the scarlet if it couldn't make me money.
i wasn't clear enough... I meant "make money" as in put their cameras to work (rental). Thought that might have been clear. While there will be some that can rent an s35 scarlet, the majority of the demand will be for epic.

Scarlet s35 comes after epic. Ff35 comes when the monstro sensor program is done... Next year.

    Jim
    68.
do you have a ballpark idea as to when you will be caught up with mx upgrades. And, when you are caught up, will new red ones come with mx?
everything depends on how many people want to upgrade... We are moving along at a rapid pace right now. My bet is that 50-65% of the red ones will get upgraded. Every one of them should be upgraded imho. The value going forward will be red one m-x cameras.

    Jim
    69.
while it's obvious you can't give a date for any cameras, could you provide a range for each camera... The earliest possible date they could arrive, and the latest? I.e. S35 scarlet october-january.
i'm done giving estimates. I am now giving reports of where we are.

    Jim
    70.
is there something you guys know, and are ready to release/announce, that we're not picking up on? If so, could you give us a hint?
Regarding the missing #21, is this a development, or a big feature you want your competition to be kept in the dark on?
answ.1: You guys will not know what #21 is until it is released..
    Jarred land

answ.2: We are no longer in the business of giving our competitors a "heads up" on what comes next. Red is the place to be if you are interested in the future...

#21... My favorite thing in the whole world.

    Jim
    73.
since the scarlet fixed is supposed to be ready to shoot out of the box, does this mean it will come with a cf card?
    no.
    Jarred land

nope... You have to decide which one.
    Jim
    74.
how are we doing with the still mode??
    just fine... :-)

    jim
    75.
all this talk of "scarlet" by end of 2010 (potentially :) ) - however as announced the scarlet 'branding' covers a range scarlet 2/3" 8x fixed lens, scarlet 2/3" interchangeable, scarlet s35 and scarlet ff35.
    1) which 'scarlet/s' will be by end-ish 2010?
    2) i guess i'm really asking about s35 & ff35. Are they still planned, and if so what timeframe?
scarlet s35 is a reality as soon as we catch up on epic production.

    Ff35 is next year.

    Jim

have you considered building a h.264 proxy module that will be compatible with current red ones? Having a h.264 module for epics and scarlets is fantastic - but at least initially, there will be a lot more red ones out there, and once work gets out to directors that they can view red footage on their ipad, there's going to be a lot of disappointed people once they realise they're shooting on an old model red.
you can record out the hd-sdi to proxy recorders now.

have you already have discussions about the new cameras/formats/standards with companies like adobe, avid and apple? On day one of epic shipping, will all the popular applications (such as photoshop, light room and aperture for example) have support for the new r3d stills format? Unlike with the red one, you have a fair amount of time to work side by side with 3rd party companies to sort all these things out...
i would think we are a bit further along now with 3rd parties than we were 3 years ago when we were a scam. :-)

we want people to use the cameras. That's why we have the integrations, sdk and free software from us

recently we shot with our custom rigs, an s3d commercial using two red one's. We would like to see epic with more futures for s3d by combining two epic's which has genlock for playback two epic footage from their respective cameras using master/slave usb controls. Also looking for timecode in/out be perfect.
Epic in s3d will have bigger role to play in 3d live action sports for 3d hdtv content generation and hope you people also consider developing software related to s3d in future checklist in epic software development as well for red cine-x.
epic has alot of stereo features including a shutter sync that's not limited to genlock framerates.

any update on the mx's faster read/reset times? My understanding is this was scrapped due to a sensor calibration issue.
    not scrapped.

would you consider releasing a ff35 mx sensor cam to get ff out quicker than monstro?
    no. Ff35 is monstro.

jim, what would you do differently if you could start this ride all over again?

of course... I was just more curious about the timeframe. Obviously when the red one came out, thanks to the quicktime proxies and free red software you could play with the footage straight out of the box, but it did take a while for some of the major software players to catch up. I was just wondering if this time round, given that everything is being tested behind the scenes, whether all the 3rd party companies will one step ahead of the end users...
Thanks jim and rob for your prompt replies, and for your courage and creativity! It's greatly appreciated! Keep up the industry changing work!
epic support in the sdk will be out to developers far before shipping cameras.

is the time lapse feature using the epic, now able to process all the images in a single clip with a more prolonged (over 1 second exposures)??? Or will you use the camera as a digital stills camera and process all the pix's in to a time line in post?
single clip as with red one: Yes (same as r1)
    longer exposures: Yes

ok here is a good one - were you ever contacted by another company that wanted to buy you out of the competition or a company that wanted to join forces in some way? Maybe you can share some juicy industry story?

is there any chance that we can give our epic/scarlets a name and have red properly stamp them for an added fee?
I hear that ketch has some italian names lined up.
    yes... We love custom stuff.

would you ever consider selling turnkey post systems for processing r3ds to take the guess work out of building compatible hardware?
