Those of you shooting with RED-Ones in 2K, 3K, and 4K, what size external hard drives do you use to store your data on and off site?

If an entire one-hour movie is filmed with a RED-One in 4K how many GBs or TBs are used ??

For every hour of 2K video shot how many GBs of data storage is needed?

For every hour of 4K video shot how many GBs of data storage is needed?

I'm sorry if these seem like stupid questions, but I'm just starting out with a new PC and need to know the additional requirements for data storage, etc, etc.

    Thanks.

I find that 1Tb of storage covers about 7-8 hours of rushes.

If you transcode to Prores 422HQ in 1920x1080 the files get a touch smaller, if you go Prores 4x4 they get substantially bigger. The precise nature of your workflow will make more difference to how much storage you need than anything else, but 7-8 hours of Redcode on a 1Tb drive has panned out as a rule of thumb for my shooting.

In addition, I'd suggest you start thinking about 4k acquisition as the norm, as 3k and 2k for a lot of people are only rolled out for higher frame rates, ( as you compromise on sensor area and hence on field of view, sharpness etc.) they shouldn't be used IMO to calculate storage requirements. Go with the highest requirement and be surprised when your slomos don't eat space too badly ;)

It is important for me to know about 2K storage more than anything else, since that is most likely the format we will be shooting in. Our work is 95% for television, and we MUST be able to use ALL our lenses, including the Super16 ones for our shooting. It's just the way it is. We have no choice if we want to accomplish what we want to accomplish.

    Thanks.

In my experience you can expect to shoot about 250-300 GB of 4K per day on a feature. So if you're going 2K, figure about half that.

I guess, again, I did not phrase my question correctly.

What I'm trying to find out is this:

If I run the RED-One, set on 2K, for "One hour" non-stop (forget whether it's feasible or not), how many GBs of data will I use ?

If I know THAT I can calculate how much storage I will need.

    Thanks.

    download the aja calculator.

set in your parameters, frame size (2k), redcode (whichever one you are going to shoot at)

set in number hours, that's how many gb you'll be getting. You can run this for a great deal of codecs red and others.
