How do they count pixels? Does each photo element count as one pixel?
In other words does the sensor have 6M green, 3M red, and 3M blue photoelements - or does it have 24M green, 12M red, and 12M blue?

The count therefore should be 4 M pixel, as long as pixel stands for "picture element".
Depends how you define picture elements.
This is a much returned to discussion, along with "is it really 4K" that I feel is a bit pointless. 12 megapixel or 4K is a significant marketing specification but no more.

No, 12mp is the designation, not anything else. You can argue all you want, but that's how the digital stills camera world talks about their sensors and we do too.
Fact is, there is no 12mp fast (ie up to 60fps) 3 layer sensor.
Fact is, putting a prism in there would mean prism artifacts and extra chromatic aberations, and you'd have no compatibility with cinema glass.
Fact is, you need to optically low pass filter anyway, to avoid aliasing.
