Master Primes and DigiPrimes are made to be very sharp when wide open. I still think they looked a little better (more contrasty) when stopped down, but nowhere near as dramatic a difference as the Super Speeds.

And yes, the lenses have been tweaked by Stuart at Focus Optics. Useable? Yes, but still noticeably softer.

any sense on how product from optar illumina might compare with that from optica elite? (i'm asking on quality, not cost). how are the optics? how are the mechanicals? i realize optar illumina does not yet have 35mm stuff, but on the basis of their 16mm lenses.

They are not being released until spring of next year. I don't think we are going to hear anything at all until 2009.
