I would like to add my vote to having the lens stay on axis makes for this tool to be far more useful than if it does not remain on axis. Also, Detlev's diagram shoes the rig would not need to be that much bigger.
I played with some measurements myself, before noticing Detlev's image. After figuring the farthest point on the camera from its optical axis is the outside bottom corner of the handle grip, that seems to be about 135mm from optical center. Currently it seems the R90 rig's radius is about 116mm. So the circle it is based on would have to grow about 17% Not that much. I guess that would make the whole circular arc portion of the rig grow by close to 25% though.

Another thing. What if the side handle grip were removed and a different mounting bracket for the camera brain were used? Seems the R90 rig would accommodate that configuration and allow for rotation around the optical axis...

All that thinking aside, I agree with Jarred's statement above that optical axis rotation is not really necessary. However, just thinking of a few cool tricks that can be done if maintaining the optical axis is possible.

Eitehr way, I'll have to be buying the R90. It looks 100 times better than the chunk of aluminum angle I use now. :)

There are many ways to rig a camera sideways. The optical axis would be important in my book as well.

Fantastic news Red team. Although I am viewing this from 35k feet over the US somewhere so can't watch link, I vote reduser to be iPhone friendly. This is great, keep it up. Best. Clay

Wow, this is great news. Cant tell you how many times we use our Cinesaddle, a level. some gaff tape, etc to turn our camera 90' for VFX shots.

    Keep the cool stuff coming!

I see the usage of this device as tilting 90 degrees for VFX and stills. Period. That's Awesome!

If you need the sensor to stay perfectly on axis...GET A HOT-HEAD THAT'S MADE FOR THAT PURPOSE!

    please.

These type of products aren't revolutionary & have been around in the photo world for a long time now in the form of flash brackets .

No need to get all breathless, Red simply made the same basic type of design to fit their cameras.

I think that especially for the still photography one would love to retain the side-handle in place for comfortable access to shutter release, etc...

Having said that - the actual ring could be just in front or just behind the handle (or both, having two rings), which would allow for smaller design then the total diameter including the handle...

@Ethan - Jason was not saying the product was "revolutionary", he was only pointing out that it is practical for every-day use...
