It requires sync'd shutter glasses. Meh.... Absolutely no reason they can't produce this same projector with an alternately polarizing filter to allow for use with conventional polarized glasses. Oh, wait... But then they couldn't charge us $150 for heavy, shitty, shutter glasses. Yep.

Except that wouldn't work for people without a silver screen, and then you'd be complaining about the cost of the silver screen...

Of course, I'm sure we would both prefer it if Sony had silver screen manufacturing tech investments over consumer digital device tech investments in this instance because then they'd be selling the silver screens which make WAY more sense to the consumer then 3D shutter glasses, but what the hey.

Special screen required, yes, to maintain polarization. Does it have to be silver? No. There are other materials that can do the same, I don't know how they relate in cost to silver right now. On the other hand, a single projector that can alternate polarization within itself would already provide quite a bit of savings over current dual-projector systems that place polarizing filters in front of the lenses.

I would think the cost of the screen would easily justify itself in contrast to buying several sets of shutter glasses at $130~$150 each. Especially if you're trying to set up a screening room or similar where you may have 8 to 15 people or more.
