  1. #1 FCP l&t sharper than RCX with sharpening???why?
    OK,

So as simply put as possible...

I did a PRORES 4444 capture using FCP l&t and a PRORES 4444 render using redcine-x 352.... And the results are confusing!

The version captured to PRORES 4444 in l&t is WAY sharper than the version out of RCX 352...

The difference is there is surely more dynamic range in the highlights with the version out of RCX.. but much much softer... Even with sharpening at (3) the version out of RCX is still much softer...

Why would this be? how can I maintain the detail sharpness of L&T, but get the highlight DR of the version from RCX?

    Thanks for any comments!

what size prores? what debayer setting are you using in rcx? are you only using the sharpness slider in the look window? if so, try changing your scaling filter (assuming you're not doing full res outputs). it's under the options tab in the export preset editor. default is Mitchell. try lanczos3, it'll probably give you the results you're looking for, although I've never once used l&t through final cut, so I dont know what it looks like.

    Eric,

The PRORES 4444 out of RCX was at full debayer 2048x1152 off of 4k 16:9 on MX. The sharpness was set to 3.. and the scaling was on the Catmul rom..

So confused why it is considerably softer.. The prores version out of RCX has more DR than the FCP l&t.. its arguable because of the sharpness issue which is better to go with

    Thanks

umm if your doing a full res debayer, the sharpness control should not be doing anything at all... hence why it is disabled if your using a rocket card.

    Ian,

Thanks for the reply.. I am not using a RR card.. but thanks for that info.. was not aware.. Anyways yes the DR is better out of RCX with prores 4444 full debayer, but the image is much sharper out of FCP l&t to the same coded ProRes 4444..

    ???

If you are using Redline to render then there is a default type of sharpening going on. With RED RUSHES you used to be able to select different forms of sharpening, but that software is no longer useful for "newer" red footage.

You might be able to instruct REDLINE to use a different type of sharpening filter, but I would guess that the difference is that the L&T and RCX are using different types of sharpening filters.

RCX uses REDLINE to render images so this is perhaps where the discrepancy might be.

    David,

    Thanks for the reply!

I am quite sure all of the settings are at the most high quality and sharpest available out of REDcine.. I am just confused that others have not complained about the lack of sharpness coming out of the program...

L&T prores vs. RCX prores are completely different in the sharpness factor as well as the DR factor..

Wish we could have the sharpness from FCP's version with the extra DR included out of RCX's version of PRO RES..

    Thanks again!

How does the L&T version compare with a RCX half deBayer? I think that is more comparable. Full deBayer and scale always looks softer (or smoother depending on how you look at it) than half de-Bayer, which looks perceptually sharper, because it has more aliasing.

you need to check your redcode plugin in system pref. - if it is to Half high/premium and the other is Half standard/good there will be a perceived sharpness difference.

I have just tested myself and I can find no difference in perceived sharpness when the settings are set to the same.

One thing to note is you cannot as far as I know set with downsample filter to use in FCP L&T.

    - I tested with Lancos (and later wth Catmul) in RCX using half good to 1080 prorez HQ. and in FCP used half standard. looked the same to me.
