    A Christmas Story

Little Virginia: Daddy, here's my list of things I want Santa to bring me.

Daddy: (Putting list aside) Honey, I think Santa has a surprise for you this year.

Little Virginia: Oh Goody! What is it?!

Daddy: Well, it's a camera... the best camera in the world.

Little Virginia: Oh, I'm so excited! When can I play with it?!!

Daddy: Well, not for a long time honey. But after I'm dead and gone, the camera will be all yours.

Little Virginia: Will it still be the best camera in the world?

Daddy: I'm pretty sure it will.

Little Virginia: Will I be getting any other presents?

Daddy: No honey. But you can play with some of the ones you got last year that you've hardly looked at so I can buy this best camera in the world for you. Is that alright?

    Little Virginia: Yes Daddy.

Daddy: Good. Now I need you to help me convince mommy that buying the best camera in the world for you is much more important than getting some silly old diamond bracelet or new wardrobe.

One camera is a shoot... two or more is a production.

Not that I can afford one, but what modules will be ready to go with these early cameras?

Also was wondering the purpose of this. Is it to raise capital? A PR move to stem the tide of other company's announcements? Has this become the Tattoo program for testing?

**oh wait, there's another huge thread about this. maybe the answers are there, time to go read**

Its pretty simple I guess, RED can make EPICs in house and Jim has said he is going to make these cameras even if he eats the cost. For some folks price is well worth it, keep in mind that even at 58k its less then the competitor cameras that do less then a third the specs of an EPIC. I am personally excited to see EPICS in the wild sooner then later..this is good for everyone.

Jim, if you have continued demand for these EPIC-Ms even after production EPICS-X start rolling off the line, will you consider to continue to fill that demand?

This is it: the moment that Epic became real. I'm not in a position to order a hand-made Epic, but I want to step back for a second and acknowledge the significance of what is happening here. Red One was disruptive, but Epic is another order of magnitude altogether. I know there are some on the forum who understand, but I don't think the rest of the industry fully grasps what is about to be unleashed.

Beyond the incredible accessibility of the price point, the unprecedented form-factor, the modularity, the software-driven (and therefore constantly improving) architecture, the plug-and-play workflow, streaming options, compression options, overcranking options, compatibility with AF still glass, touch focus... these are all amazing, but they are practically footnotes compared to the big three: resolution, dynamic range, look.

It's one thing to set high goals, but ordinarily these are an asymptote, a target that is driven towards yet never quite achieved. By all accounts, Epic's original goals have been achieved, and then exceeded. This is a huge credit to the team that pulled it off, as much as it is to those who set the goals and saw them through to execution. Presumably others will copy Epic's capabilities in the years to come, but there is simply no question that Epic signals a fundamental shift.

Jannard has a reputation as a marketing guy. There was a tendency to dismiss him as a dilettante at best, a snake oil salesman at worst. R1 earned him some grudging respect: it turns out that he knows how to build a solid team... still upstarts mind you, workflow grumble grumble, clipped highlights grumble grumble, immature company grumble grumble. With Epic, Jim and the Red team deserve a new level of respect: these guys have achieved something that would probably not have happened for another decade without their tremendous effort.

My hat is off to you: consider this a virtual standing ovation!

    Very Best,
    Tim

PS - I suspect that you're just hitting your stride... can't wait to see what comes next! Stay healthy, Ted too, and don't forget to take a moment to savor the victory!

Right on, Tim. Today is the first day you can actually order an Epic. Sure, it's not for everyone yet, but it's there. And within a few weeks there will be customer-owned working Epics in the field, with feedback and footage to keep us waiting for our turn.
Congratulations to Red team. I'm sure there will still be many bumps to clear along the way, but this is nonetheless a major milestone!

This is a great way for the rental houses to get their hands on some Epics! Sim Video, PS, I'm looking in your general direction.
