The Hobbit will be amongst the first productions in the world to use the EPIC and at least thirty cameras will be required by the 3-D production. The EPIC'S small size and relatively low weight, makes it perfect for 3-D - where two cameras have to be mounted on each 3D rig.

I wouldn't be surprised if those thirty haven't already been built as the +13s. That is probably what gave Jim the idea to offer handbuilts to RED customers.

Interesting. Never thought of that. But wasn't it said that the +13 cameras were missing some board in them that the m bodies do have? Since there are only 13 and the order is for 30+ (taking into account they prob will have backup bodies) I would think you would want cameras that have all the same components in them for unity. Especially with the complex nature of 3d rigs that require singular communication between two cameras. It might be a problem if some are missing essential circuity.

Please don't try to guess what is going on here... someone might actually believe you know what the story is. :-)

The Hobbit doesn't start principal photography until early next year.
